It's a good, enjoyable movie. It's not great, but it's probably the closest that Brian DePalma will ever come to making a great film.

David Mamet wrote the script, and there are some very memorable scenes (even if one of those memorable scenes is kinda lifted from another film), including the ever popular "baseball" scene.

The film's biggest weakness, in my opinion, is the casting. DeNiro is good as Capone, but Kevin Costner as Ness is weak and uninspired. Sean Connery plays an Irish cop with a Scottish accent in a highly overrated performance that's not worthy of the praise and rewards it received. Andy Garcia fares a bit better...but not much.

Overall, a good film and worthwhile entertainment. But it could have been better with different talent behind it.

There were complaints about the DVD when it first came out. No extras, except maybe a trailer. The picture is decent, but the sound is a bit lacking.

I probably have some higher praise for the film than gamblor, but agree on several instances, Kevin Costner does nothing for me but apparently Elliot Ness was pretty much a drip as well. I thought Connery was very good. The movie was very entertaining but although the baseball scene was a historical fact, many things deviated from history by a wide margin. DVD could have been much better but is part of my collection until a better version comes along.

The great detail on clothing and mise en scene is nothing but first class. The score is awesome, and that probably because it is pretty simple. I thought this film was one of the best films I have ever seen when I saw it 13 years ago. Today it is not on my top 25 list, but it is still a pretty darn good film. A must, I think, but that is just me.

I personally love the film, and I can't wait till its a fulfillment selection at CH I work at a rental store, and I ordered Untouchables to check out the DVD and its awesome - both in sound and picture quality (when you take into account the age of the film).

I'd say its definitely worth a rental if you're unsure.
