I missed this Jack Nicholson movie, and see it is coming out on DVD in June. How was it, and is it worth a rental or purchase?

I liked it, will probably get it, but it wasn't that great of a movie. The end seemed to drag on a little bit. It had an interesting performance by Benicio del Toro and Jack Nicholson was really good.

i enjoyed it a lot more than most people did. if i can get a good deal on the dvd, i might pick it up. i'm not sure how often i'd watch it though, i really can't say why without giving much away. definitely rent first.

those with some interest in Philosophy might find the film more interesting than most. the film (and the book it is based on) is a retelling/update of Søren Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling. without giving the plot away, the film is about the concept of faith, and how difficult it is.

please note that i'm not saying the rest of the world is too stupid to "get it." it's just that there is a secondary level of meaning that the film takes on in light of a knowledge of Kierkegaard.

This movie takes a long time to get to the ending, and I found the payoff to be anticlimactic. Look elsewhere if that sounds unappealing based on your past experience.

My brother loved the film, I'm fairly indifferent about it, and my father hated it.

No and no. He just loves Jack Nicholson and the ending shot made the movie for him. I would have been fine with the ending if the movie had built up to it; instead, I found the ending to be rather deflating. Thus while I admire the film in many respects, I did not find it walk out of it particularly glad I had seen it; hence my ambivalence about recommending it.
