Carlito's Way is an excellent film in all respects. Great script awesome performances throughout, especially Pacino and Sean Penn. You owe it to your self to see this movie. As for the dvd, I really can't comment( I saw it on laserdisc) but as far as the reviews on the dvd , everything I've read said it has an excellent transfer (don't know if it is anamorphic or not), and excellent sound quality, but has no extras.I personally have been waiting( and hoping) that it is re-released as a special edition, but if you haven't seen it, by all means go for it.

Chances are favorable that you will like it if you liked DePalma's and Pacino's original pairing in SCARFACE, though CARLITO'S WAY is overall less violent and expletive-laden...

Where did you read that? Every review I read of this film said that the transfer was crap.

In terms of DVD audio and video quality, Carlito's Way is a dream come true. It's a wonderful and flawless transfer. Colors are pure and bright -- the various neon and rain shots come together incredibly well with no noise or compression problems to report. The sound is top notch, and with this soundtrack it better be. Gun shots ring and echo, and the scenes in the disco with the swirling, raising and falling volume can't be matched.
C&P'ed from Amazon's review of the disc:
Picture Quality: 4.5 (5 is the highest rating)
The non-anamorphic DVD, framed at 2.42:1, delivers images that are sharp and detailed. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered. Color rendition is excellent with vivid, richly hued colors, natural fleshtones, and deep, solid blacks. There are no apparent DVD artifacts or noise to mar the superb visual experience.

Thanks scott27, the Digital Bits review was one that I remember reading, along with a few others. I do remember some reviews saying that Donnie Brasco had a poor transfer, but everything I've read on Carlito's way was favorable, but like I said ,I've only seen it on laserdisc.

I can't comment on the DVD as I saw it at the theatre -- very good movie, with a CLASSIC subway chase. However, I've been holding off on buying the DVD because a few months ago, I had heard that they were coming out with a SE version, but I've not heard any confirmation since. Same with "Sea of Love" -- I swear I heard they were making an SE. Love that one, too.

On May 22nd, Universal is realeasing a 2-pack with Carlito's Way and Casino (MSRP $35). I highly recommend getting this if you don't have both films.
