Yup, I know it's a 4-year old DVD, but I'd still like your thoughts all the same. Since it's an early DVD, I was wondering how good the video quality is in relation to current discs. I'm also wondering if anyone's heard of a re-release of this disc with a new special edition or something. I know, highly unlikely for this low-profile sci-fi flick, but you never know (well, I never know, because I don't know anything)... Thanks for your help.

DVD Talk Gold Edition
generally speaking, it's pretty excellant all across the board. haven't watched it in a while, but its at least B+++ or A- in terms of a/v quality. maybe better. it also has at least 2 good audio commentaries (there might even be 3 on there) and a few decent looks at the special effects work. and all for about $15 now. i wouldn't expect another special edition anytime soon, as the disc as it is, is already great.

DVD Talk Legend
With THREE audio commentaries plus other extras, this is a "special" edition whether labeled that way or not. I liked this movie a lot, and the commentaries made me appreciate it even more. This is definitely a winner!

I'll definitely get it then and not bother holding out for a future version. Seems to be an outstanding disc already. I just hope that the stock they have at my local Wal-Mart isn't one of those early discs that were manufactured incorrectly. A lot of guys at HomeTheaterForum.com have been complaining of their Contact discs degrading and becoming unusable. I assume it's because they bought their discs early when the erroneous batch was produced. Has that been a common problem with other owners of the DVD?

Like you mentioned, this is THE problem title when it comes to "rot". However... I'm inclined to believe that was more of a first pressing type of thing... My copy is still A OK.
As everyone else has mentioned... The DVD is top notch. Great picture, great sound, great extras and at a great price. Buy it.

Very good DVD all around. The quality used to be the best, but the newer DVD's look and sound better (Gladiator, SPR, etc.) But, it is still a great DVD, and movie. Hopefully, a DTS soundtrack one day.
