DVD Talk Legend
Care to post a link to this title? As far as I know, there is no such DVD...
There have only been two releases:
1. "Director's Cut" (which was really just a workprint version). Now out-of-print.
2. "Theatrical version" currently in print with a few extras -- deleted scenes, etc.
That's all there is in Region 1... are you talking about some other region?

apart from the sweepimg and inaccurate generalisation above, you are 100% wrong.
In the UK we have easily available chipped players, most TVs now are NTSC/PAL dual standard, greater penetration of widescreen TVs (32" widescreen for less than $750 now) and superior PAL picture quality...
I have many R1 discs and lots of R2 discs too. I just go for the better version, which in a lot of cases is R2.
I'm not going to list them - look them up.
I know who has the best deal - and it's not the US.
Yours Correctively,
Lik.

Quotes from the horrordvds.com review:
Sadly, the overall quality of this transfer is rather poor, at least by DVD standards. It's not that this image on this DVD is plagued with all sorts of problems, it's just that there was obviously no restoration or enhancement done. The biggest problem on this transfer is the colors which are consistently faded and washed out. Blemishes and grain are quite minimal, hardly appearing at all. The picture is soft and lacks any real detail. Occasionally some minor MPEG artifacting can be seen in the background...
Argento (European) Cut is presented in a 1.33:1 full frame transfer. This transfer ended up being worse than the DC transfer. Nearly all of the same problems are found, except they're more severe here. Once again colors are faded and washed out; the picture is softer than the DC and once again lacking in detail. The image goes from either being too dark or a bit too bright. MPEG artifacting is a bit heavier here, but just as with the DC it's only occasionally noticeable in the background. Blemishes and grain are minimal here as well. I'm scoring this one a D+.
Don't be too jealous, this is a die-hard fan purchase only. Document of the Dead, included in this set, can be purchased separately.
Also of note is the UK single disc set. While it's been trimmed by 6 seconds of some of the most graphic footage, it has a commentary track by Tom Savini.
On the whole, I'm giving serious consideration to a region-free player with a PAL converter. Not just for this stuff, but things like Mad Max with the original dialogue, Delamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man), Return of the Living Dead, and many others.

...it took me a while to realize, myself, but the (charmingly named
) Lik Mearse is absolutely right: living in Region 2/Europe has its rewards, DVD-wise:1) - most made-in or -for-Europe TVs are perfectly capable of reproducing NTSC input, be it from LDs, DVDs, or (horrors!) VHS (my own 2000+-title movie collection includes all three carriers, both PAL and NTSC, and - as far as DVDs are concerned - titles from Region1/NTSC, R2/Europe/PAL, R2/Japan/NTSC, Regions0&3/Hong Kong/NTSC, and R4/Australia/PAL, not forgetting 'adult' DVDs, which appear to be mostly R0/NTSC, regardless of where they're made)
2) - in Switzerland, where I live, many out-of-the-box DVD players are sold as 'region-free' or 'code-free' units - those that aren't can be 'converted' fairly easily, or one can special order a multi-region player, or a suitable 'hack' via the player's remote can be found
3) - ordering DVDs from the USA (which has by far the largest number of available titles), Australia, Japan or Hong Kong (or France, the UK, Italy, Spain, etc.) is an easy matter, thanks to these wonderful inventions: Internet and Credit Cards (
)...so, all told, we do indeed have 'the best of all possible worlds' - if only my bank account would be bigger than it is... (

DVD Talk Ultimate Edition
Yes, but R1 DVD releases are almost always better than R2 versions, for these reasons (remember, they're not generalizations but still true most of the time):
1. U.S. films are released much sooner in R1 (duh)
2. correct speed (no PAL speed-up)
3. cheaper price
4. better extras
5. often better packaging (Magnolia, limited edition tins etc.)
6. better selection of titles
7. Criterion (which releases world cinema better than any other studio)
BTW, I rented the Dawn two disc set (mainly for the Argento cut and the Goblin music) and it's not worth buying. Anchor Bay will eventually give us the ultimate edition... just give them time (hurry up dammit!!!
).
