Saw this on the other "jumbo" forum. Costco.com has for $499 and they offer a $100 rebate on their site. Also, Panasonic has a $100 rebate as shown below:

http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_el..._100rebate.asp

If all goes well $299 + tax and shipping!

Interesting. I originally thought that the $100 rebate from Costco must be the same one, but it does look like it is handled differently.

What's the difference between the LV55 and the L50? And what does Costco mean by:

"This item is covered by Costco's guarantee to
refund your purchase price if you are not
completely satisfied. Costco's guarantee
applies, even though this item may not be
covered by the manufacturer's warranty,
because Costco is not an "authorized" dealer
of the merchandise."

Does it mean if you ever need service that would be covered by a warranty you can just return the unit?

FYI, this may mean it is not eligible for the panny rebate...

In reading the panasonic form, there is nothing about qualified sellers. You just submit the form, the lable with the UPC code (redundant?) and the cash register receipt. It would seem they could not define certain stores as eligible and others as not. I could start a store and sell DVD players, buying from some wholesaler (as Costco does).

The cashier receipt note is a little worrisome, but I know that other online stores sell the same item with the panasonic rebate mentioned.

The one thing that MIGHT get you, is if Costco's inventory has had the UPC label removed. Sometimes that happens.

Worried about two receipts?

Ask Costco to produce an extra receipt when you buy it. Many stores do this... the receipt is labelled duplicate, but it looks like the original in every other way.

In reading over this issue on another fat forum, someone had called a Costco CSR and someone else called a Panasonic CSR and both said it was a separate rebate. Hmmmm...

BTW, someone here in my office did the deal a month ago for the LV50 for $380 after rebate. He mentioned that the label you have to send in to Panasonic for the rebate is on the outside of the box, and there was like 3 of them.

I hate to quote myself, but does anybody have an answer to:

1) The difference between the two models?

2) What's the deal with the warranty and Costco's guarantee?

The 50 uses a slightly smaller active matrix screen. Some people think the 50 has a better pic (but then smaller screens do look better). The 50 is known for getting a little hot on the bottom of the unit.

The 55 is thinner.

Thank you. I couldn't find details at Costco's or Panasonic's sites.

Now how about that warranty thing? Since it doesn't have a manufacturer's warranty, who does it? Does Costco just refund your money?

And will Panasonic give a rebate on when you buy from a non-authorized dealer? Maybe the Costco rebate is supposed to make up for Panasonic's not honoring it.

That is the big question X. At $300 for this thing, it's a great deal. $400 is okay. You could return it to Costco if you were not happy with the deal in 30 days, but how would you know if the rebate works within 30 days since most take longer than that?

Maybe buy it and monitor the forums?

Since the unit probably has a limited warranty (90 days?) I assume (in other words, I am clueless) that you would take it back to Costco in that time. After that, who knows?

I have the 7 inch model & think its MUCH better even if it costs more. If you see the 7 inch model after seeing the 5 inch model, you won't want to go back. It's that much better. I figured.... you only live once, so enjoy life with the finer things.

Then again, I have a 14.1" laptop that plays DVDs and computer with a 21" screen that plays DVDs and of course, my normal home theater.

I have watched DVDs on the 5" screen, and I agree it's a bit small. But for airplane/car use, it is fine. At this price difference for me, I could not see paying that much more. Heck, if it was not for the rebates, I don't think it makes much sense for me to buy any of these, since I normally take my laptop on trips.

I figure the portable does some neat things my laptop does not do. It can function as another full player ofr another room in the house. I can hook it up to TVs in hotels, something I wish my laptop could do. It can be used to watch a DVD by someone, while I am working on the laptop. It is small enough to use to listen to DVD commentary on long drives.

Looks like my post is a "hit"

I ordered the 55 also. Costco does NOT have a maximum length of time that items can be returned. They "guarantee" your satisfaction, much like Sears does.

I have returned items to both of these stores, YEARS after the purchase WITHOUT a reciept and there was NO problem. As for Costco, as long as they can find the item in their system they will give you a CASH refund.

It's best to save the packaging and reciept, but it is not required. They only require that you return all of the parts. Also, if you don't save the reciept and the price drops, they will only give you CASH for the lowest price they sold it at.

I have never looked at a 7" screen so I for one am not spoiled. I am planning to sell my bedroom player to help cover the cost.

I Can't wait to see this thing!

FYI

In case anyone is wondering how long it takes to get the Panasonic rebate back.

I bought a LV55 a couple of months ago and sent the rebate in on 03/06 and got the $100 rebate check on 03/26. About three weeks, WOW .

I have never gotten a rebate back that fast.

LV55 Screen?

Can anyone who owns this player confirm that the screen is an active matrix screen or is it the cheaper dual scan? Can you see the image looking at the screen from angles?
