You should not lose performance...but you may lose the vibration functionality.
I tried to use controller extension cables with my PSX and lost the vibration functionality...probably because they are all made by third parties and therefore are not licensed and therefore do not comply to Sony's specifications. I could be wrong but I think the same might be true of the PS2.

i bought a 6'extension cable (non sony brand)- $6 and vibration works. i don't know if chaining additional cables would affect it. actually, i don't know why it would affect it at all?
