My receiver has two digital cable inputs. One is for the DVD player and is optical and the other is for CD and it is coaxial. I already have my DVD player hooked up through the optical DVD input. The problem is I just got a PS2 and would like to hook it up digitally also. Is there a coaxial digital calbe for PS2? If not would the sound be worse if I changed my DVD player over to the coaxial CD input and used the DVD input for my PS2. I have a Kenwood receiver if that helps. I am just looking for any kind of options where I can get Dolby Digital 5.1 from both my DVD and PS2. THanks for the help.

Chris

Does your DVD player also have coax out? If so you could hook it up using coax and the PS2 using optical.

If this is not possible there are adapters available to convert one into the other. Here is a link:

My DVD does have a coaxial outlet. I am just not up to date with all the digital stuff so I was wondering as long as it is going into the receiver digitally, will it be converted into 5.1? Like I said one is for DVD and the other says CD so it was confusing me. Thanks for all the help!!!

A digital cable can be either optical or a standard 75Ohm coax (RCA). Does not matter- they work the same way and pretty much are the same sound quality wise.

I am in a similar situation. My DVD player has both coax and optical digital out where as the PS2 has only optical out. Therefore I use the coax out from my DVD player and the optical out from my PS2. Both work just fine.

Thanks for the help. I think I am going to do the DVD in Coax and give the PS2 the optical. Does anyone have any recomendations on which Coax Digital cable to use and where to get it? Also, what is the price of these?

As a side note, I think there are also switchers available for switching among several optical conections.

Do a search for "digital coaxial optical" or similar words in the HT Forum here on DVD Talk (here's a search I did), and you'll see a lot of people suggesting that you can just use a standard video cable instead of an over-priced "digital coaxial cable." I hooked up my DVD player to my receiver using a standard video cable tonight, and it sounds just fine... as good as my optical cable. Actually, better... because after I try out a few more DVDs and make sure that I really can't tell the different, I'll be returning my $40 cable to Best Buy for a refund. Music to my ears.
