My dvd player is on its last legs and i'm looking at replacing it soon. after going out looking at various players i found a Sony package that came with a dvd player, 5 speakers, subwoofer, and receiver for $599. I live in a small apartment so i don't need much output, nor am i looking to spend a whole lot of cash. My question is is this a decent deal? What all should i be looking for? This system says it has DTS as well as the DD but it unfortunately for me it is at a Circuit City and the employess there weren't much help in answering questions. (i think they were just salivating at a little more commission for the day)
So could anyone give me some tips, maybe a brand to look for or avoid... perhaps some pointers on where to get a good price.

I would take a look at the Kenwood Home Theatre in a Box. HTB-403, HTB-503. They are both in your $$ range. There isn't a dvd player included, but the speakers are much nicer than the sony's, and the receiver is much better also.

I second the Kenwood HTB-503 recommendation. This is one of the few Home Theater in a box setups that I would recommend.

What makes the speakers and receiver 'better' than the Sony? Is the receiver able to do something more than the Sony receiver?

bought this 2 weeks ago, and now that it's properly set-up i can vouch for the good reviews. just saw that sears has a close-out on this in todays circular.
w/ a good sound mix like Titan A.E's DTS track or Godzilla (great use of the rears!) you'll be very happy.
solid bang for the buck. especially considering you could easily spend more on just a reciever.

and yes it has DTS decoding.

I don't think that the Sony package would be a bad choice... you may want to check out http://www.audioreview.com for owners' reviews of HT equipment. You may have to search for reviews of the parts separately... I don't know if there's a review for the HTiB that you saw. I remember when I was shopping for a receiver that some people who owned a certain Sony receiver complained of a hissing noise.

Yamaha HTs?

How are the Yamaha home theatre in a box systems? I took a look at the YHT-23 and it sounded pretty good. The receiver is sure for good, but not so sure about the speakers. What speakers would you get to go with the receiver? Also any opinions on the YHT-17 system?
