So I want to get rid of my SONY STRDA50ES receiver, which is only a 6 channel receiver. What do you recommend? Everyone says Denon is great but I hear Yamaha is awesome too. I have no idea which receiver to get though. I want to go with something that is upgradeable when the new format comes around. I'd hate to be switching receivers every other year in order to stay on top of it all.

Please help.

I currently have an eight speaker set up.

1 Center
2 Front
2 Rear
2 Rear surround
1 Sub

Thanks.

I really have not budget but if I am going to have to pay top dollar it really has to be worth the money.

If you are going with an AV reciever and not seperates I suggest...Both of these are expensive but they are worth it IMHO.

Denon AVR-5800 this is their flagship piece and it is very nice.

Onkyo TX-DS989 this is their flagship model and it is also very nice.

What's your budget dude? Is it $10K or $1K or $500? That will make a world of difference in what we can suggest. The Onkyo and the Denon already suggested are great, but I would add the B&K AVR-307 to that list. But all these are bumping $2500-$3500. Seperates will be in this range, probably more depending on what you get.

I think I would like to stay under $3K. But if for about $1K I can get something awesome that will serve my purpose rather than spending $3K for something else...you see I don't want to throw my money away just because everyone claims something as the biggest and baddest thing around.

On the other hand I do not want to regret my purchase.

Could I have confused you anymore.

Thanks.

Go for the Denon 3801, 4800, or 5800. They are all 7.1 receivers and all have DTS-ES/DD-EX. The 4800 and 5800 being THX certified if that matters to you.

I am in the same situation and I am getting the 3801 until a decent pre-amp with DTS-ES/DD-EX comes along.

The Denon 3801 would be a great choice and can be found online for around $800. If you lean toward the $3K mark, the receivers already suggested or seperates are the way to go.

In the seperates realm, I would go with a B&K Ref 30 (approx. $2500) and Sherbourn amps (7 channels will cost you approx. $2300 street prices). A big advantage of the $3K receivers or the seperates quoted here are they are upgradeable.
