Ok, i just set up a new theater system, and have noticed a weird, annoying quirk. Only on dvd's, when people talk their voices occasionally seem to "break up", i don't really know how to better describe this. Their to almost kind of crack. Lemme give you an example: on the 5th element dvd, right after Leeloo jumps through the wall, the doc says "perfect" this break up alot, and is very noticeable. So i guess my question is this: am i just hearing things, is there something wrong w/ my system, or am i just now hearing things that were muffled before on my tv's speakers?

here are my specs:

Dennon AVR 2801 reciever
B&W speakers ( don't know the exact modles, i will post that later)
Pioneer dv-525 player.

All I can tell you is it's not on the DVD. Have you done any sound calibration with VE or Avia? Try it in stereo then try it in DD to try to isolate where your problem is occurring.

ok, here's what i've done so far:

tried swapping sound trough all the speakers and still got the crap.

plugged in some head phones...still got crap

so that rules out the speakers as a problem, right? all that's left is the player and the reciever. I am connected via optical cable, if that helps.

And where can i find a copy of one of the discs? I would like to run some tests.

->also, i switched between DD, Pro logic and stero, still got the crap. god damn, this is pissin' me off.

Cap,
It sounds like you MAY have a bad optical cable. They can be a bit tempermental at times. Can you try hooking the DVD up via coax (just us a simple video cable (the ones with yellow ended RCA connectors).

As for the test DVD, you can buy them at any store that sell DVD's like Best Buy etc. You can also rent Video Essentials on Netflix (if you belong to Netflix that is)or call your local rental stores to see if they have a copy.

Again, I really think it's your cable, try the coax route if you can, if not just go pick up a new optical at Best Buy or something.

ok, here's what i've done now:

switched to coax, still got the ****

switched to direct analog (white/red) still got the ****

switched to analog right to the monitor, still got the ****

so it must be the dvd player, do you think this is a reasonable conclusion? Is it possible that my damned dvd player is what i messing everything up like this? on digital AND analog outputs?

Could very well be the DVD player. Do you have a friend with a DVD player that will let you borrow it to test the theory out?? If not, I guess you could get yourself a new player from a store with a decent return policy, and try it at home to see if your problem goes away..if not, just return it, and start looking more closely at your speaker or receiver.

Good luck

Hard to say...they'll probably want to try to fix it first (depending on how old it is). You can may be able to sweet-talk them into just swapping you out a new one if you have the receipt and the original box and stuff....

Never hurts to ask for an exchange....Good luck bro!
