Wega Widescreen ?

I have one of the original wega 36" sets. To my knoweledge, it's not equipped for widescreen mode. If I set my Sony 550 DVD player to view movies in 16:9 widescreen, will this accomplish the same thing? What would the results be to the picture? Thanks all.
