I tried this today for the first time and I was very disappointed by this. Is there anything I can do like load another program onto the disc to help? Thanks in advance.

For what it's worth, the only media that I've found that will play on my 3109 & 5109 is Verbatim DataLifePlus CD-RW.
They have a silver / blue surface.
As soon as I found this worked, I bought 25 silver/blue CD-RW's from ebay (Infodisc brand). They won't work...

My experience is the same as SockMonkey's.
My solution? I recently bought a refurbed Denon DCM-370 from ubid for $165 delivered. Spidergear also sells them for around the same price. It's a significantly better cd (and cd-r) player than the Toshiba (Denon also does HDCD), and since it holds five, we've been listening to our rather large collection of discs far more in the two weeks we've had this then we ever did before. Like all the posts at audioreview say, the sound really is noticeably better than whatever it's likely replacing.
Our audio/video cabinet is now full, though. No room for new toys

And I forgot to mention, Mr. Soprano, if you ever happen to send Furio up to Toshiba's customer suport office with a baseball bat, I've got a few old bones to pick with them too.

CD-R media, eh? Sounds like Tony's watching thoses bootleg copies of "The GodFather" again! Don't worry it's coming to DVD soon. You might have to buy the 3 pack though, I know how you love that 3rd movie

Try Verbatim 10x CD-RW. They work great with my Sony DVD player. I was surprised.

It was my understanding that the 3109 doesn't support CDR/CDRW/VCD discs. Some of you seem to have been successful, however, in getting some CDRWs to play. I've not gotten any CDRs to play but have never attempted CDRW.

I have a SD3109, and can relate to your frustration. My roommate did pick up some VCDs when he was at hime in Singapore, and they played fine. They were plain silvers, didn't have any probs with them. Other than that, nophing. Good thing I got that 301 Disc Pionner changer to play all those wonderful burned CDs though
