OK, I'll play. But I'll be giving away my age, as my audio system is old but still nice sounding:
Audio system
Speakers, KEF 103.2's
AMP, New York Audio Labs Moscode Maxi 300 (hybrid 150X2 amp)
Pre-amp, Sondex (british made integrated amp that was modified for us as a pre-amp)
or
Pre-amp, PS-Audio 4.5. (I would switch between the two)
CD, Origial Meridian MCD
Turntable, Rega Planar 3
Cables, mostly Kimber
Since moving into a new house have decided not to set up my audio system and going with home theater, still working on. So far:
Main Speakers, KEF 103.2's
Center Channel, KEF Model 80C
Surround, Some NHT indoor/outdoor spkrs (will be installing some built-ins eventually)
Receiver, Sony STRDE-845
DVD, Sony DVP-S5300
VCR, JVC HR-VP655U
TV, JVC AV-35BP3

I too am a poor college kid. I scored most my stuff off of the golden ages of ebay. I got 4 NHT super zeros and a SW2Pi Sub for $475 on there back in 1997-8 and then resold them for around $900 or so last year upgrading myself to the vonschweikerts. I also got a bitching deal on my old receiver which was also sold for more than I bought it for on ebay more than 6 months later. I've invested probably around $2000-3000 in my system and have equipment that in retail would cost more than $10k. It's luck, and it can work for you too. Just keep your eyes open. Like right now you can get a Harman Kardon 2.0 pre/pro for around $800 from onecall that has a retail of around $2200. Bitching piece of machinery. Anyhow, you just got to keep an eye open. If you're looking to do some budget upgrading let me know...I'm always shopping and always see good deals.

This is my 1. post and I guess it is as good a place to start as any...
Coming down with the HT Bug big time!!!
* Denon AVR-3801 (just 1½ weeks old...and cost me a bundle, but this is a 1st class 6.1 discrete receiver for the price. Does almost everything the THX certified big brother does. 7x105watts output...NICE! )
* Samsung DVD-909 (on sale, but also bought new (has the latest firmware 3.29) - went back to the store and returned the Nintaus 9901 (anyone know this clone?) machine I bought 3 weeks ago after finding out I got audiodropouts on dts (& dts-es, even some 5.1 DD stuff) playbacks ...however I gave up MP3 and some CD-R playback, but I guess I can live without. The Samsung gives you multi-region / NTSC---> PAL60 AND PAL50 (I prefer the ‘real’ thing – region-code 1 all the way) / as well as macrovision free TV (after the little remote hack…cool!))
Anyway...don't underestimate the Samsung xx9 machines...
*Sony SA-VE705 5x satellite speakers incl. Sub (fits my blue painting and rug )
*JAMO E 4SUR (Danish speakers)
*JVC HRJ-628 Stereo Video (almost 5 yrs. old ... but still very good...does NTSC playback that I probably couldn't live without)
*28 MRX Telefunken TV - broke down about 1½ yrs. ago, but I got it fixed...and I guess I've been kindda attached to the sorry thing ever since. But, it's gotta be older than me!
Some of you have sweeeeeet TV's / projektors (CRT/LCD stuff). Can't wait for round 2! ... when I can afford it ...did some one say 'rathole'...
I know somewhere there has to be room for improvements...but then again...'It's only a movie!!!' L8R...
Dreaming of the perfect setup,
Gnuig
Copenhagen, Denmark
P.S. Thanks for all the helpful stuff on Samsung/(Thomson) machines and audiodropouts!!!...some of you guys really know your stuff To bad Thomson won’t allow you to turn off the macrovison...had a serious eye for the 4500 machine! I guess some day there might actually be a machine that does it all!!! Peace-out.
P.P.S. Figured out I could edit...instead of me talking to myself Used :-) for my smilies before...until I looked at the 'Smilies Legend'...ohh well...forum newbie mistake. C Yaa.

I like my 2 channel system a lot. Naturally, I'd like to upgrade, but considering how poorly the stock market has been lately (and the fact that I'm still in college), it'll be awhile before I get the Revel/Levinson system I keep dreaming about.
On the other hand, my HT audio system is too good for the crappy sound that DVDs contain. I chose the components based upon price (I got serious disounts on all the stuff I bought) and their politeness, yet they still reveal the warts in DD/DTS. I cringe at the thought of an even higher resolution, more neutral system with DVD. However, a 16:9 RPTV is next on the list.

Nice system rmount.I just got the ButtKicker and Carvin amp combo for $699.00 and it was a HUGE upgrade over my pair of Clark Synthesis 229`s.I am saying this because of the quality of your system. The ButtKicker literally destroyed the 229`s in extention, quickness ect.

You have obviously put a lot of thought into your system, but I am curious about a couple of things. What video system you are using and your selection of Buttkiker over the Clarks. I demonstated the Buttkiker with the Carver amp and found that the clarity of the Clarks seemed better and response was also good using the Denon amp. I was not as impressed with the specs on the Carver amp as I was with the Denon, but really couldn't hear much differance. The real reasons I selected the Clarks was their relative size and the fact I needed 4 units to work properly with my seating arrangement. This would have been cost prohibitive with the Buttkikers. I am also trying to maintain THX ultra specs so the Denon I thought was a good choice. My next upgrade will be the DLP projecter.

The amplifier I am using with the ButtKicker is the "Carvin" amp.The only thing I do not like about that amp is the fan noise.I am putting it in another room so that will no longer be an issue. As you know the ButtKicker demands a lot of power so the Carvin amp works great and with 1000 watts bridged,it offers a lot of bang for the buck.I am planning on building a platform for the couch and ButtKicker that is big enough for my feet to rest on as well.
My Clark units worked great but I did not like the way they lingered after the tactile feel.It does pick up subtle movement very well, but it just feels slow compared to my SVS subs. The ButtKicker is quick and hits HARD with no lingering effects. There is a guy from the AVScience Forum and the Hometheater Forum named John H who uses 2-ButtKickers and 2 of the new flagship Clark units on his bed which rests on a platform he built. He has the best of both worlds.
