I'll be moving out into my first apartment sometime within the next few months. The apartment complexes around here only offer cable TV. First priority is trying to get myself hooked up to Directv or the dish network. (Buying a bed and furniture can come second.)
Does anyone live in an apartment complex and use satellite TV? I would like to keep the actual dish hardware inside of the living room, for security reasons. I would point the dish out of the window, with the drapes open. Would this work, as long as I have a clear view of the Southwest?
Thanks in advance!

Yes it works. I have done this in a dorm room and in an apartment. The windows in the dorm room had double layered glass and it still worked. When it rained the signal would go out sometimes. I was located in Louisiana which gets a stronger signal compared to someone farther North.

It very much depends on the type of glass and its thickness. I had a case where I couldn't get through normal house and office window glass. But it worked fine through an office's first floor double thickness (~.5") glass. You have to try it out.
