I recently ordered a VHS video tape from Germany for my wife. She saw this animation (Once Upon A Time (1976)) in English when she was little, and she has always wanted to find a copy. The only copy that I could find is called "Der Zauberstein," which is in German and in PAL format. What options do I have to view this on the NTSC-only US television/VCR? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is going to be my anniversary present to her.

You'll pretty much need a PAL to NTSC converter, which costs about $600. You might be able to find a company that will convert the tape, but it's unlikely they will copy a copyrighted tape.

You can buy VHS VCRs that will copy from one standard to another, and I guarantee you they cost less than $600. Ebay have them all the time, Samsung and Aiwa are two makes. However, if all you want is to watch one tape...

I've never had any problems with getting copyright tapes copied from one standard to another. Most companies are quite happy to do one or two copies.

Any video production place will do it for you for roughly $20-$30 plus cost of the tape.

They make you sign a waiver that says you do not plan to sell the tape, etc.

I had Song of the South converted last year. The companies are very aware of the copywrite issues for this movie but still did it with the waiver so I am sure they will do any movie.

Thanks for all your replies! I think I'll try some local conversion services tomorrow. I recently had my wedding video transferred to DVD, and I have to say it was like watching it for the first time; the clarity of both the picture and sound was just amazing ...
