This looks very promising..and with online prices 25-35% lower this is exactly what I've been waiting for! Did anyone get to see these models at CES?
In projection sets, Panasonic is introducing a new 47-inch (diagonal screen measurement) rear-projection 16:9 widescreen DTV-compatible* (1080i/480p) model, expected to ship in May, 2001 with a targeted manufacturer's retail price (MSRP) of approximately $2,000.00. Additional projection TV models will be available in screen sizes ranging from 51 inches to 65 inches. DTV-compatible models feature a built-in progressive scan doubler. All the new projection sets feature a great, user-friendly function: nine-point menu convergence control. This feature gives users finely tuned control of the set's convergence. Other features include BBE sound, two-tuner split-screen P-I-P, and new lighted home theater remote control.

Prices have to come down such as this if they ever hope to sell this new generation of TV!!!

I figured that was a typo on Panasonic's press release. The dates at the top are
the details for this years 2001 CES show.

Man that really sucks about the 720p because I am looking for that in an HDTV set at the moment. I hate that it has to upconvert it to 1080i. Oh well my search continues. Guess I'll wait another year, until the Pioneers at my store do it.

Hmmmmm... judging by the size of that remote, I would estimate that screen to be about 6.5 inches. 
Actually do you have the URL of the site you pulled the pic from? I checked FutureShop and 2001 Audio/Video, nada.

As more and more sites get updated, I'm hoping that the wide range of pricing online will yield a price in the $1700 range. Then it will either be this, the Mitsubishi 46 (new model if there is one) or a new 45-50 inch model from Toshiba that I hear might be coming. Oh, and I can't forget about looking at the new Phillips progressive scan player as well!

Do you have any details about that upcoming Toshiba model that you mentioned? I'm on the verge of buying the Toshiba 56H80, but am waiting till this Panasonic comes out to see how the quality of it is... sucks having to wait till June though. If Toshiba is coming out with some new ones sometime soon then maybe I can wait a bit further, but not till fall.

That's definitely a price drop. I wanted a HDTV last year (I wan't even stuck on 16:9), and when saw the prices, I saved myself $1000 by buying a 16:9 LCD FP and a 120" electric screen.
With prices falling like this, they're only about $1200 from where they need to be to start selling HD sets! Of course, at that price point, they'll have to throw in the tuner or STB for free.

I was in a home theater store and overheard the sales rep tell a customer that Toshiba just had a manufacturer's price drop on their widescreen sets. Normally, I would blow this off as "sales pitch", but I wonder if the threat of Panasonic setting a new low-end price barrier is already putting pressure on the other manufacturers. I'm looking at purchasing a new Toshiba (either the 40" or 56" model), but I'm hoping for a price drop in the next two months before I buy.

Price drop on Mitsubishi HDTV
Mitsubishi has just dropped prices on their HDTV RPTV. Two stores in the Seattle area are now selling the WT-46807 for $1999. I bought mine April 1 for 2399, and today went by the store and got $434 back on the price guarantee. The Mits are great TVs, so I'd consider them before the Panasonic.
