Does PS2 Read Anamorphic DVDs Correctly?

I hooked up a PS2 to my HDTV using the supplied composite cables, and even when I set the PS2 to 16X9 format, anamorphic DVDs filmed in 1.85X1 play with black bars. This shouldn't be the case. I have a "real" DVD player hooked up to the same TV via component cables, and it plays 1.85X1 anamorphic DVDs with no black bars (as it should).
I thought maybe the cables had something to do with it, or the fact that my DVD player is a progressive scan player. But then I remembered my folks have a regular DVD player connected to their regular TV via composite cables, and when I set it to 16X9 just to show them the effect the image became vertically stretched (so I know it's possible to see the anamorphic info via composite cables).
Anyone else having this problem with their PS2 and anamorphic DVDs or know what's wrong?
