I'm looking into DVD Players (not DVD-ROM drives for my PC) that are region free...I know there are a few with hidden menus and such, but which exact models are these, and are they any good? How much is the cheapest one?

Thanks.

The Sony DVP-S335 is a multi-regional player but most companies don't brag to load about the feature. Visit codefreedvd.com to see a number of multi-regional players.

My Pioneer DVL-909 DVD/LD player is region-free through the set-up menu. Haven't had the opportunity to try it though.

HITACHI 505 is with a firmware update!

THE SONY 535 IS NOT MULTIREGION OUT OF THE BOX! FROM A STANDARD RETAILER.

ITS HAS TO BE CHIPPED!

The APex 600A is the best bet IMO. Under $200 from many retailers (Circuit City, etc., I bought one from K-MArt on T-day for $99!). The newer ones are more reliable but don't have the hidden menu. However, it's a simple case of buying a mod chip (about $30) and popping it in. This will also get you the latest firmware rev (N-5) that fixes the lipsynch problem and handles the 'advanced' features like branching. For lots more info, just gop to <www.nerd-out.com>. There's a whole bb forum dedicated to the Apex. $^)

For the best bang for your buck, try Samsung 709.

It can be easily hacked by the remote to make it region-free and disable macrovision. Its on sale for $99.00 at hifi.com.

I've had mine for almost a year now, and I have had very little problems.

goto 709online for a detailed faq on remote hack, DVD titles, and anything else dealing with 709.

Is there a web site that lists code free dvds. codefreedvd.com does not list code free dvd players. They list the players that they modify and sell..

Hmm.. interesting.

Just checked Hifi.com and they have no mention of the 709 samsung model.

Anyone have a link to it?

I guess I got a little lazy:

www.709online.com

It has all the info you need to hack the DVD player.

If the player is not listed at Hifi.com, it may have sold out. You can give them a call about it. The player is advertised on this months catalog.

I really like this player. Very simple, no digital outputs. But its region-free, so now you can order "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and watch it over and over again.
