Anybody else have this problem?
Is it just Toshiba decks?
Is it just the SD1200?
Is it just me?

It is not you, it is the Toshiba.. the unit lacks the ability to modulate its laser to read CDRs.... 1st gen. Sony’s and all current Pioneer units can, as well as the much talked about Apex player....
If I were you and you wanted a player in the same price range that can read CD-R/RW and is still a knock out as far as performance, I would pick up a Pioneer 525

Yep, I agree with Dave. I have a Toshiba 2109. I didn't do my homework before I bought it and found out the hard way that it couldn't play cd-r or vcds. I just bought a Pioneer 525 to replace it, I'm very happy with the Pioneer. Classy looks, great performance and navigation. If you can return the Toshiba, I would do it.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the current Toshiba players (not even the progressive scan ones) can play CDRs.

CD-Rs and CD-RWs use a different laser frequency to DVDs. Most DVD players only have one laser. The exceptions are the 1st generation Sony's - 300, 500, 7000 etc. and the current Pioneer model- the 525. I don't know about the other Pioneer models and the Apex. Those specific players have two lasers. One is used specifically to read DVDs and the other for all other media including CD-Rs and CD-RWs. As far as car CD players and home audio CD players there is no such problem. From what I have heard it is not good to play any non-DVD media in DVD players that have only one laser as there will be more wear and tear on the laser and mechanism. You should really have a seperate CD deck to play music CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Obviously the only exception is VCDs which have to be played on a DVD player, DVD-ROM player or CD-ROM player.

I too have the 2109 and it will not play most recordable and rewritable media, but it will play some. I have had success recording music, but not VCDs on Memorex platinum for playback in my Toshiba.
See http:www.vcdhelper.com for compatibility issues with Toshiba. Also, Toshiba reports that most of their new DVD players are VCD 2.0 compliant.
I personally have not had any luck with VCD yet, but we'll see.
