Go to Radio Shack and get an RF Modulator. It should be $29. I had to get one to hook my player up to my old TV before I got my new TV.
All you have to do it plug the RCA connectors(Yello,Red,White) that come out of the DVD player to the RF Modulator. Then run your cable connection into the RF Modulator and then out of it into the TV. It will look fine although you will lose some picture quality over newer TVs with S-Video. It will still be better than any picture you have seen on your TV.

I don't know what kind of VCR you have, but you should be able to stick the RCA cables from the dvd player into your VCR input in. Then go to your line in channel on the VCR, and it should work.

Unless you have a really old VCR, this will NOT work.
The problem with hooking the DVD player through the VCR is that it will trigger the copy protection on the DVD called Macrovision. You will see an alternating contrast level (light to dark and back) that is erally annoying.
Do as the first responder suggested and buy an RF modulator. Before I bought my Wega, that's how I had the player hooked up.
