Filmmaker's Mode

This is a fascinating new development being promoted by filmmakers:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/be...etting-1234968

I am of 2 minds on this.
Yes, it would be good to have a built-in Filmmaker's Mode for displays.
OTOH, not all source material escapes technical errors from transfers.
Because of that, I want the ability to make minor adjustments.

As long as this is simply an OPTIONAL "mode" activated by a button on a remote, this could be a great thing.
Of course, we will have to see it in action before passing final judgement.

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

Fascinating isn't really the word. But it may be bigger than Blu-Ray Live. More useless stuff in the big picture. Bill Hunt tweeted some of the filmmakers behind it.

And I hate embedding.</code>

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

I think it's a great idea, especially to combat the woefully inadequate default settings on most sets. Makes sense, with so many people opting for home entertainment these days, filmmakers should have a voice in how their films are displayed at home by Joe Six Pack, though the irony is he doesn't know good settings from bad anyway.

Here is the proposed settings for Filmmaker Mode:

FILMMAKER MODE APPLIES TO BOTH SDR & HDR CONTENT:

White Point: D65

IMAGE & DISPLAY PARAMETERS:

Maintain source content frame rate & aspect ratio
Motion interpolation: OFF
Overscan: Only if signaled with the image
Sharpening: OFF
TV Noise Reduction: OFF
Other image “enhancement” processing: OFF

I like how my tv goes into a particular mode for Dolby Vision. This new mode sounds like it would be similar. Sounds good to me.

Yeah, when I head about this, I basically thought to myself, so TVs will just have a setting that turns all their other settings to "OFF."

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

My tv is already set up that way because I know what the fuck I’m doing.

Those that don’t get it will never get it. This “mode” isn’t going to fix dumb.

Maybe it should be called the "Smart Button?"

Yeah, I think a better idea would be to push TV manufacturers to ship sets with all these 'features' defaulting to OFF. It irritates me to no end that I have to go in & turn all this crap off for every single input, every single mode. These enhancements should be something can enable, not something you have to disable.

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

They shouldn’t be put on tv’s at all.

Ive never seen anything that motion interpolation makes look good. It’s always bad.

No, they shouldn't. If J6P wants full motion smoothing and way too much contrast and sharpness up the ass, good for them. Filmmakers have zero say in that.

This is a gross over-estimation.

I'd go so far as to say less than 1% of viewers give a shit, and if this new "Filmmaker Mode" got defaulted to on for some discs or some types of content (however that would work), people would lose their shit because they THINK the image is too dark, even if it's more accurate.

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

Even those who think this is a good idea will be appalled at the settings and claim most of them are wrong and the picture doesn't look right. This is more useless crap that isn't needed.

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

At long as it’s at least close to the correct settings- the default settings on most TVs is so wrong it isn’t even funny. Some people trust that the default settings are correct,
so that’s how they keep them.

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

Bill Hunt had a column about this proposed feature. I really don't see the harm in it. I think this is Hollywood's way of addressing OLED and future display tech in a uniform manner.

I have to agree.
Once someone PURCHASES the right to view a movie, they should have the freedom to view it any way they see fit.
And we don't need no stinkin' Nazi videophiles trying to insert control over what someone does in the privacy of their home.

FWIW, I like the term "Suggested Filmmaker's Settings" a little better.
As long as it is an optional feature incorporated in a display, then fine.

True. This is just a feature for the high end user.

I don't know how this "Filmaker Mode" is going to be adopted. Especially when the picture and technology of each set is different. What you see on a LG OLED will be different than a Panasonic OLED etc etc so who's to say how Filmmaker mode is really supposed to look?

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

I didn't see any mention of a light monitor. It's hard to imagine a setting that would be good for all situations.

Regardless, I'm like others and have my TV set up properly, anyway. Still, I suppose it would be nice to be able to just do it automatically.

Re: Filmmaker's Mode

I think it's a pretty decent idea, though I agree with the notion that it should be optional.

The problem with the "I have my TV set properly so it doesn't matter" argument is that some TVs make it very difficult to do so. For example, my Sony 4K set has several different, ambiguously-named and poorly-documented settings related to "motion (smoothing)". You might think, "I should just turn all of that off" but you'd be wrong, because if you turn it all off, it doesn't eliminate 3:2 pulldown to correctly show 24p content without judder. I had to find an obscure post on a home theater forum where someone did detailed testing of all of the different motion settings for my TV model to identify which combinations result in 24p content being shown properly without judder and without interpolated frames.

VERY true.
I have a 940c and documentation on settings is frustratingly fuzzy.

Out of curiosity, which model do you have and exactly what setting are you speaking of?

I have a 49X900E and 75X900F. Fantastic TVs overall, but the motion settings are a nightmare. Here's the post I was referring to that decodes all of the motion settings:
