Wife approves 75-85 inch Sony 4K TV for Christmas 2018

Okay, so this morning, wife decides she wants to replace our current 55-inch Sony Bravia TV that we’ve had for going on 12 years with a Sony 4K UHD Smart TV. She is also willing to consider Samsung. We are looking at Christmas to purchase as the one big gift we are buying each other, as we are are also flying to Texas the day after Christmas first-class to visit our grandkids.

The TV does not need much as far as apps, as we run 95% of what we watch through a Roku box (YTTV, Netflix, Amazon, Vudu) and will be purchasing the 4K compatible box during Black Friday. It will also be hooked up to an attic mounted antenna.

I may be able to get her to hold off until the pre-Super Bowl sales, but if we were to spend up to $3,500, what should we consider looking at? I would consider other than Sony and Samsung if they are a good value.

I own a Sony. Get the Sony. The picture processor is fantastic.

Black Friday week usually has the best prices of the season.

The Sony XBR85X850F is $4000 now, so it'll be under $3000 by that time, maybe lower.

I might lean towards the Samsung, the QN82Q6 is around the same price.

Both have higher models at much higher prices that can be considered if budget isn't a problem

Re: Wife approves 75-85 inch Sony 4K TV for Christmas 2018

I'll probably be looking for something around this range towards Black Friday this year. The Samsung KS8000 65 inch TV looks small in the living room that we have in our new house, and my wife approves of something bigger.

Sony seems to be the best option at 75 or higher according to reviews on RTings. Sure wish I had an extra $9K lying around for that 77 inch LG OLED though

I have the Sony 75" 940C.
It truly is amazing.
I'll be buried with mine.

Why not get a Samsung?

I don't trust Sony. I bought two Sonys in 2006 and 2010 blue spots and streaks were showing on the TV.

$2,099 for a 82" Samsung

Well that’s an odd bump. Perhaps he already bought one since he said Christmas 2018.

And I would never buy a new TV from EBay, as it will more than likely void any manufacturer warranty. And I’ve never seen an authorized dealer sell on EBay.

I'm going to get one of those TCL tvs. I want a 75 but will probably end up getting the 65 and a wall mount. Man, wall mounts have come a long way. They have a shit ton of clearance now than when they first started putting them up on a wall.

Yeah, that TCL for $1299 was an awesome deal. I was very close to getting one.

Maybe though the company has been selling at Ebay since 2011 with over 10,783 points with only two negatives and one neutral comment unless they rigged the feedback score.

Apparently no sales tax unless they charge it later.

ielectrica is their website where they have the same TV but charge more.

It all depends if you care about the manufacturer warranty being voided by Samsung. For me, I don't think it's worth it, even with a seller in good standing.

I contacted the seller and he said it comes with the one year Samsung warranty.

Most TVs usually have no problems and they can last for decades.

It looks like you can't find a OLED TV 82" inches or bigger when I checked Amazon.

77” is the largest so far. If you can handle the price tag.

I wonder how far they can go with the size of the screens before it becomes impractical since there is only so much room to house or display these TVs.

The bigger tvs get, the harder they are to move around.

I’d say that 85” or so is probably the largest practical size. People need to be able to get these things into their houses and apartments, up and down staircases, through doorways, and around corners.

If you want bigger than that, you’ll need to get a projector.

At least until they make tvs that can be rolled up in a tube.

They are working on that:

Watch this 65" TV roll up like a yoga mat

Makes you question why buy TV now when the latest technology has a number to it like 4K, 8K, and maybe the next thing is 16K TV.

Not really. 8K is just novelty at this point. You could get a good 5+ years with a good 4K before anything in 8K starts to become available. And I highly doubt there will be any physical media in 8K within the next few years, if at all.

We are up to 65 inches and I doubt we could go much bigger. We are only about 11' eyeball to screen. Movies with a wide scope wouldn't be bad but TV would give me a headache. Too big and you have to keep moving your eyeballs in order to see the whole screen. At least that was the thought in the olden days.

That is what they probably said about 4K but 8k might become more common later this year or next year.

Re: Wife approves 75-85 inch Sony 4K TV for Christmas 2018

The TV alliance people are still trying to roll out 4K to networks and cable, and UHD is still a novelty to most. Netflix charges more just for 4K, and Amazon has limited stuff. 8K is years away from anything until a standard gets ironed out. But at least we can get the TV's now and watch 4K stuff on it.
