I have always wondered the difference in the DVD player setup menu it has the following choices:
16:9
4:3 Pan & Scan
4:3 letter box

I have a standard 4:3 TV and have always used 4:3 letterbox. But the other 4:3 setting doesn't seem to make a difference. Anyone know what those 2 choices do?

16x9 changes the video signal that the DVD puts out. So if you have a TV that is 16x9 or has 16x9 enhancement then by all means, USE IT!!

Most standard 4:3 tv's look their best with 4:3 Letterbox to maintain the original aspect ratio, but you will get bars no matter what choice you get. Remember, you are using a 4:3 tv, not a 16:9.

I think that some movies are encoded a certain way that if you pick 4x3 (not 4x3 letterbox), it will cut the sides off evenly to fill the 4x3. It's not the same as pan&scan though, because if the action moves to the side the player will stay in the middle & not follow. I would never use this setting(especially since I have a 16x9 HDTV now).
