My TV has two SCART sockets, one 'normal' and one s-video. At the moment my DVD player is connected via a dedicated s-video cable and two separate audio cables. Will using a scart-to-scart (to the TV's s-video scart socket) improve picture/sound, degrade it or make no difference, please?

WHAT??????? Never heard of "SCART sockets"....

Can you explain it to me..

SCART is a European standard. It's a 21-pin rectangular shaped socket/plug. And it's sometimes called Euroconnector.

I live in Europe too and I have a similar setup. Your current setup is a optimal one. If, and I mean IF your DVD-player's Scart out outputs S-VHS through Scart (it should say it in the manual) and you connect it to your TV's Scart connector you'll get the same result as your current setup. If not, your picture quality will decrease.

My 0.02: leave it as it is (and you don't need the 2 audio cables if you connect your DVD-player digitally to your amp/rec)!

Thanks for that exm, that's what I needed to know. The reason I'd like to use scart is that my tv automatically switches to the AV channel the moment it receives a signal which means I don't have to change modes before playing a DVD, I just hit play. I'm that lazy But that auto-switching doesn't happen with s-video.

Are all scart cables the same (apart from quality issues)? There's no such thing as 'regular' and 's-video' scart cables is there?

I know what you mean 'cause my TV does the same!

About scart quality: just like other video cables there is a difference in quality and as far as S-VHS goes: some cheaper cables don't have the pins connected so make sure it's 'S-VHS enabled' (means pins connected)
