I just bought a Mitsubishi WT46805 Widescreen TV. I have last year's bottom of the line Sony DVD player (no component video outputs).
I'm planning on connecting the DVD Player to the new TV via S-Video. I have read some reviews that implied that I will not be able to view anamorphic DVDs with this connection (I'll have to use a "zoom" feature to get them to take up the whole screen, sacrificing picture quality).

Is this true, or did those reviewers not know something about setting up the connection/TV/DVD Player properly? I was eventually thinking about buying a progressive scan player with component outputs, but was hoping that my Sony would satisfy me for at least 6 to 9 more months.

As long as you can specify in your dvd player's menu that you're using a 16:9 monitor, all of the video outputs on the player will then work with your set.

Then, any anamorphic titles you have should* play just as they're supposed to.

*Can anyone think of any reason why they wouldn't? I sure can't.

No reason why they shouldn't. I output an anamorphic image through the composite output before*.

*Just for S&G. Not recommended.

Yes, I can specify output to a 16:9 set in the setup menu on the DVD player, so hopefully it will work.

Nothing like shelling out $2500 for a set and feeling really good about it, then reaing an on-line review by someone who porbably doesn't know what they're talking about. I was freaking out for a few minutes there.

So, it looks like I'll be OK. Anyone else conform this?

Ahh, I just thought of an instance where it might not work. The DVD player will definitely output the anamorphic image through s-video, but it is very possible - however unlikely - that the TV won't go into anamorphic mode when it is set to a video input. I have no idea why this would be true, but it is possible. In this situation, the TV would refuse to unstretch the s-video input, so you'd see the "squeezed" image from the DVD player but have no way to unstretch it across the entire width of the screen.

I wouldn't think that you'd have this problem, though. Most likely, the reviewers were erroneously using "HDTV" and "anamorphic" interchangeably. Also, some prog-scan inputs default to the stretched mode, so that you couldn't watch a non-anamorphic image without it being stretched unnaturally. Maybe that's it?

I have a newer model Mits, but I'm going to assume the inputs are the same/similar...
You should not have any problem with anamorphic video. The only limitations of your model (which don't apply to your player) is that you must use component to get progressive scan.
