Looking for one for a xmas gift, doesn't have to be all high tech.. hoping for under $200

they have a sterio reciever that has a 5.1 input on it, I think it's prologic.. so something that works with that would be nice but not totally necessary. Optical sound port would be good too for if they get something better someday, but I don't think it has any coax or optical plugs on it right now... and svideo for the video would be good too

anyone know of any inexpensive players that will fit the bill? And maybe where I can get em from online or offline?

It could be difficult to find a player having the 5.1 outputs on it in your price range. You may want to do a price search for the Toshiba SD2200. It is a dual-disk player, has composite/s-video/component outputs and coax/optical digital outputs (as well as the 5.1 outpus on it). It usually retails for around $250, but you can probably find it for less (around $210 or so).

For $199 you can get the Toshiba 1200. It has component out and digital coax out.

The Sony DVP-S360 has just been reduced in price (MSRP) from $299 to $249 - here in New York "The Wiz" is selling this machine for $199.99 (plus tax). The DVP-S360 is a very good DVD player in the eyes (and minds) of many people. For general info go to the sony website (www.sony.com) and read all about it. For opinions other than mine go to audioreview.com

Check out the Apex DVD players. I think Circuitcity.com has them under 200. What's more is they have a secret menu feature that allows you to play DVDs from all regions as well as MP3 and other recorded media.

Stay away from Apex, you get what you pay for.

I would get a Panasonic DVD-RV30 DVD Player from Amazon.com. They are finally back in stock. Use the $50 off $200: AMZN-ELECTRNC code. Exp: 12/31/00. Amazon.com's price is $229.99, minus the $50 coupon code and get it for $179.99 plus shipping, but there is also a $50 manufactures's rebate offer also so final price is $129.99 plus what ever the shipping cost.

Here is the link to the Panasonic DVD-RV30 at Amnazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004R8VM/104-8362178-1951949

If that does not interest you than head over to your local Costco and pick up the Pioneer DV-333 for $177.99 plus tax. Personally I would go with the Panasonic model, for the price.

Now, now....."...judge not, lest yee be judged." I've played around with this little DVD player for a few weeks and for a low-end player (which is perfect for a gift) it is very sound machine. I also purchased one for a gift after a lot of scrutiny and investigation. Yes they are new and the manuf. track record has yet to be established but for $100 you can't ask for a better combination of price and functionality. (100 bones AND DD/DTS outputs!) Now I wouldn't build a HT system around this player but just like a Moped, it'll get you there.

Sorry but I guess you have not read of all the complaints from people who own apex dvd players. I guess it would be good for a 2nd dvd player in the home, but I wouldn't even buy one of those for my 7 year old niece.

With all the great deals going on now, I for one will spend the extra $29- $49 and get a good quality name brand dvd player.

Kahuna

While Kahuna and I were debating, we may have forgot that it's NECROS here that is making the choice. I hope you make a good choice Necros without breaking the bank.

I have a Toshiba SD-1600 which usually lists for $199 (often on sale for less), I like it. Stay away from the SD-1200, it is from the previous model line, some stores are stil selling their old stock. Also, the SD-2200 is good, but the only difference between it and the SD-1600 (besides the price) is that the SD-2200 allows you to load two disks at one time, plus it plays Video CDs (whatever they are). Everything else on the SD-2200 is the same as the SD-1600; the SD-2200 usually runs $40 or $50 more.

The Toshiba comparison chart can be seen at:

http://www.toshiba.com/tacp/dvd/dvd_compare.html

By the way, in early November the SD-1600 was on sale at Best Buy for $189, plus I had a 10% off "good customer" discount, plus they had a promotion where they gave me Braveheart DVD for free.

I have a Konka and DON'T like it. It plays movies ok, and I haven't run into a movie yet that it couldn't play, however, it is terribly slow in the menus, annoyingly so.

Hey Nercos you should check out the Pioneer DV-333. It's an older model but it works great. You really can't go wrong with $180 shipping included. Here's the link http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...search=dv%2033

Friend of mine was in the store - ready to buy the Apex player for $199 and while he was standing there they came out and put the sale price on the Sony DVP-S360 (see my earlier post). Is the Sony S360 ONLY on sale at THE WIZ in New York???

As of this afternoon, the RV-30 appears to be out of stock again. Holds true for the $20 more expensive silver version as well.

I own one of the original Apex's and while the region-free loophole is there, the player just doesn't perform as well as others I've seen. It's a good deal and everything, but for just a little more you could get a lot more. I would go with one of the brand names. My Apex has had some problems with some discs and I'll get some sound phasing with the lips every now and then. I'm actually considering ebaying the Apex and getting a Toshiba SD2200.
