I'm confused now Does your receiver have ventilation at the bottom? Or does your DVD have ventilation. I still don't see why you can't stack your receiver on top of your DVD...the hot air from the receiver goes UP, not down...

I've been told it's not good to stack something as heavy as a reciever on top of a DVD player. I'm interested in a solution too as I'm getting a new reciever and CD changer soon and will need to rearrange my already tight audio cabinet.

This thread is very similar to the recent one about cabinets or racks. IMHO, if you've spent even a modest amount of bucks on HT, and you use it more than, say, two hours a month, you should invest in a decent cabinet to house everything. Get one with adjustable shelves, and make sure you have enough headroom for all of your components. If it's a closed cabinet, consider installing a ventilation fan (sold at computer stores), or make sure there are enough ventilation holes in the back. The back should be hinged, so you can get to the wiring easily. Big casters are very handy, too. I'm always messing with the wiring, so the casters and hinged back has cut down on the intemperate language. My cabinet has room for the Wega, receiver, CD player, DVD, tape deck (hardly ever used), game console, and the VCR. The glass doors only interfere with the remote rarely, and they make the unit look nicer. My receiver puts out a fair amount of heat (good'n'loud music), but it's on the bottom shelf, and the heat doesn't affect the next component. None of the equipment is stacked directly on another.

Funny you should mention that. I once heard a true story about this guy who used to put pizza that he bought for lunch, on his monitor at work to heat it up. Everytime he did that some of the grease would seep into the monitor. Then one day his monitor blew up in flames and he called one of the IT guys to take a look at it. When the IT guy saw what had hapenned and why he almost punched the guy in the face. Talk about stupidity.

By the way going back to the topic at hand I also would recommend against putting anything on top of your receiver.

i think it depends

my receiver doesn't have vent ducts on the top like most...instead, they're on the side...also, mine has a fan...so the top never gets hot...so putting my dvd player on top is not a problem

however, if your receiver has ducts at the top (like most), i would recommend that you don't place your dvd player on top of it...

My ultra huge receiver is stacked on top of my 100 disk cd changer so I see no reason to worry about that. Also until I got a new cabinet items were stacked on to of the receiver with no true consequences. I do not reccommend it, but it does not seem to be a huge problem.

I wouldn't do it. Heat is the enemy of electronics. It doesn't have to be all at
once. It is the steady and continues wear and tear. Eventually you will have a
problem and heat will play a part in it. A good example would be like when you
walk out in the hot sun. It feels a little warm at first and maybe even nice. But
you take a long walk in it and without a rest or cooling water you will overheat
and pass out.
My Receiver gets pretty hot and would actually start to make the shelve on top
of it about 12" away pretty hot to the touch. I bought a fan from Radio Shack.
Put a plug on it and plugged it into a switched outlet on my receiver and
Wah-La. Receiver runs cooler and no heat problems anywhere else.

Is it safe to put my DVD player on top of my TV?

Only if it wears a condom.
