I got a message claiming that the Pioner DVD 434 wasn't true Progressive. Can some one explain if this is true or what?

From my understanding, this is correct. In order to get progressive output, your DVD player has to convert the interlaced picture to progressive scan. The DVD434 does not do this. It uses a simple "line-doubling" trick to get more lines of resolution, but not true progressive scan.

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I just found DVD city which lists the Pioneer 434 as progressive. http://www.dvdcity.com/

I am really confused now.

Most places do list it as progressive (BestBuy for instance). But I still don't think it is true progressive scan (because of the lack of conversion).

It is not a progressive player. It only has a line doubler. This has bothered me for a while because it seems like a clear case of false advertising.

Thanks ZenDog. I was fairly sure this was the case but wanted to make sure. I agree, it does sound like false advertising. To the uninformed buyer, this would be a deal (progressive player for that cheap).

I hear it a really poor line doubler too. Almost bought this luckily foudn out about the 3:2 pulldown and quickly changed that to a Pioneer DV-37. I'll let you know how it turns out...
