Who shops in Canada? Except Canadians...

So...I'm guessing this isn't some sort of silly and strange April Fool's joke?

...the article was published on March 13.

It might be a sign of things happening down south.

Sharp folding up here? Not seeing that happening anytime soon. I think Sharp and Samsung are the top selling brands in the US.

Re: SHARP No Longer Making TVs in Canada

When Pioneer stooped making televisions, it was sort of a shock, but now I have to wonder if this isn't going to be something that is more and more common. I've also heard rumblings that Sony is scaling back their tv line.

It seems like the current trend for consumer electronics can be seen with telephones, which lock you down in an ecosystem, contract you with a service provider, and are replaced every year or two.

Giant televisions are bought once and used for years with no recurring costs (ie, revenue stream), and prices are plummeting. Consumers seem wary of new carrots like UHD/4k and OLED.

I have wonder what the tv market will be like in five years. Will the big names pull out, leaving only mid-tier brands like Vizio (and the cheap-ass junk brands) available to the average consumer?

Canada is kind of a strange market. Last year Toshiba pulled out of Canada as well.

The Sony stores have all shut down, Redbox is gone, the Target stores are in the process of closing, Sears is gone etc.

Re: SHARP No Longer Making TVs in Canada

I guess Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Sony and Vizio are the better brands still remaining. There have also been rumblings about Sony and Panasonic bailing out of the TV market as well.

Heise, RCA and Insignia (Best Buy) are the most popular low-end brands.

I like Sharp Aquos line. I wonder how easy is to import the TVs from the US although I have to be careful because of the exchange.

Re: SHARP No Longer Making TVs in Canada

I bought a Sharp because it displays PAL video with no conversion, the forced auto-dimming during dark scenes bugs the hell out of me though! My next TV will probably be from someone else because of that.

My Sharp TV does the same. There is a section in the menu to defeat it but it doesn't work at all. Every time there's a fade out, the screen dims. Really noticeable during credits over a black screen or scenes where the screen goes black for a few seconds.
