I'm thinking about getting a PS2, and I was just wondering if the games are CD or DVD based. Or will it be a mix. I was wondering about making "backups" as DVD-Rs aren't growing on trees right now

It's hard to say what the mix will be. Right now there are two or three games on DVD, the only one that comes to mind is Dead Or Alive. DVD offers more capacity and better streaming capabilities, but I am sure that the game developers will look at each title individually and decide what format to go with depending on various factors. I beleive The Bouncer and Grand Tourismo 3 have been confirmed for DVD.
As far as backups due to there illegal and immoral nature I talk about them here is frowned upon and if I were you I would not discuss them here.

There are more than 2 or 3 which are DVD based (not many more though). The owner of the video game store in the shopping center I work in told me that right now about 30% of the PS2 games are DVD based, and eventually more and more will be released because of the superior capacity of DVD. He said this does not, however, affect the quality of the game. The DVDs simply hold more information to make longer, in-depth games.

Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hll 2 are both going to be DVD based games!!!
EcydeDave.....which games are you referring to when you say 30% of the games out there currently are on dvd for the PS2? I would be surprised if there were more than the number which Cloud stated in his post(2-3)...just not many first generation titles which were even planned for dvd!!!

I don't know the titles. I could ask him next time I see him though. All I am saying is that I was told that about 30% of the games released for PS2 are DVD based. I was curious about the game quality (graphics and sound), that is why I originally asked about it. But I was told that it doesn't make a difference wether its on DVD or not. It's just easier to put a long game on 1 DVD than 2-4 PS2 discs. I think there are only about 12 titles or so out for PS2 right now anyway, right? That would mean 4 are DVD based if the 30% thing is true, so 2-3 is not far off from how many are out. Like I said, I'll ask next time I see the store owner. By the way, for anyone who actually has a DVD based game...do you see a difference in game quality?? Eventhough I was told there isn't, I would think there would be. Maybe not drastic, but atleast smoother graphics or something.

Not true. What I said is correct. I would take what sales people say with a pinch os salt. Most of the time they are talking out of their a*s and are just full of BS (sorry about the language
). There are only two or three games on DVD. As I mentioned there are a number of factors that go into deciding what format to use, the main one being how much capacity is needed. Although the number of games on DVD will increase there is no way of knowing what the percentage is going to be. It is definitely not 30% right now, more like 10%.
. The way to tell if a game is on DVD is too look on the back of the case. On the back of DOA2 it clearly states it is on DVD. Most of the games currently available however have the CD logo as opposed to the DVD logo. GT3 and Bouncer are supposed to be on DVD, and while I have not heard anything about MGS2 and SH, due to their cinematic nature they too will probably be released on DVD.

Metal Gear Solid 2 and Silent Hill 2 will be released on DVD.....this information was covered in Playstation magazine. I am looking forward to these two titles along with Bouncer and Red Faction!!! Shadows of Destiny could be something to look at also....and do not forget about Dark Cloud.
Hmmmm Dark Cloud.....Cloud.....any connection???
BTW...did anyone see the recent info in Electronic Gaming Monthly regarding the article on the XBox??? Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and Silent Hill are all going to be titles for this system!!! They are all going to be titled with the X following the title....and with the XBox's 64 megs of memory and a hard drive to boot...anyone else wondering here whether or not they will be buying these games for the XBox??? I know I am going this route depending on the progress which is made on development for the two systems. Should be interesting to watch how these two systems compare in regards to these titles.

Info on the XBox was obtained from Electronic Gaming Monthly's Jan. 2001 edition.
