He'll just cloud the issue. Progressive players, as opposed to interlaced players, put out all scan lines progressively until the picture is formed. Regular, or interlaced players, put out half the scan lines, top to bottom, then the other half, top to bottom just as a regular TV does.

Given its method of "painting" the image, a progressive output is less likely to have motion artifacts than its interlaced equivalent with the same number of vertical lines and will appear more stable and film-like.

Hey, I will be getting an HDTV some freakin day (maybe 2-3 months) and I wondered if it was worth upgrading to a progressive scan player. Still not sure. Yes, it's better, but is it $400 better? Is it $400 after paying for the new computer and a $4000 tv and then having to explain to the wife why you need ANOTHER DVD player (I have 3) better??????

Yeah, this is kind of a weird thread, isn't it. I was getting bored of the intense Gore discourse in Other so I'm damn_skipping around.

I haven't got a progressive player, but I have a Pioneer Elite 510 which is supposed to minimize the difference between progressive and non-progressive input. From everything I have read, if I didn't have this set I would definitely get a progressive player, even for $400 more. Mitsubishi, Toshiba, and Pioneer non-Elite sets need a progressive player to show their best. And if you heavily favor DVD as your viewing material, this is the most economical route to follow.

I'm building a home theater computer which will be progressive and I'm looking forward to any improvement it will provide. But if I were going the standalone route, I know I'd always be keeping my eyes open to a deal on a good progressive player.

Randy my dear boy. If you have 3 eBay 2 of them and get the money for the progressive player. I know how bad its going to be to get the dvd player off the 13 inch B&W TV in the kitchen. But these are the little sacrifices we all have to make now and then.


And to tell you guys the truth. My RCA plays just fine for me. Until I'm ready to make my Daddies home theater room.
