Considering DVD & BR sold nearly 20 milion in just the first three weeks....hmmm. I just know no movie comes close especially the 3D version on my 55" GT30 calibrated Panny but all look fantastic. That said it will be a very sad day when our set goes out.

Just got an emial flyer from Frys and they are selling an LG Plasma 60" for $599. I'm not necessarily an LG fan but that's a stellar deal. So much so that with all the money you're saving - since it is an LG I would not mind buying the extended service plan for it with all of the money being saved on the set.

Definitely older technology (I think it only has 1 HDMI too!). I've seen the panel at Microcenter, it's not bad for the price, but definitely a second or third room TV.

I cam close to buying the last available 64" Samsung plasma which is very well reviewed, but at the end of the day I couldn't justify spending over $3K for tech that Samsung is going to stop supporting very soon.

That's how much 55" Oleds is going for now. I've seen the price go up and down between 3K and 3.5K the last few months on Amazon. I'm sure the 65" will be at that price point within a year or two.

I wonder if 2015 will finally bring us a non-curved, non-4k, no-frills 1080p affordable (~$3k) OLED set in the 55" to 60" range... That will be my sweet spot for finally replacing my still-excellent 67" Samsung DLP led-light engine set.

How long can we expect an OLED set to last?
A while back I read they might have a short lifespan because one of the colors (blue?) will dim before the other colors.

I'm in the same boat. Knock on wood...but I still have my 60 inch Sony that I bought back in 2005 for around 4k working like a charm. Still get people over at the house commenting on the picture quality. However, it is starting to show its age, with the casing around it and what not. No smart tv, no usb connections, just 720p/1080i, but dang I still like the tv.

The Bad Albeit the most-affordable OLED TV yet, the 55EC9300 is still very expensive for a 55-inch TV. Its video processing and color accuracy don't measure up to that of the best TVs, and the curved screen introduces some artifacts.

So it has shitty video processing and whack color accuracy in addition to artifacts but the bottom line is that it has the best picture quality they've ever seen.

I've seen LG estimate that they originally had a half life of 30,000 hours but that has been improved on the new models to 50,000 hours. It's new tech ... who knows.

Does this thing still have RCA jacks? I live in fear that a new generation of stuff will be along very soon without any analog inputs at all. My window on that Samsung is closing at the end of the year, to wait for OLED or not if I have the money, decisions, decisions...

Analog inputs cost money and less consumers each year need them. We are fast approaching the day when all analog inputs will get removed on new models.

I had to order a co-ax splitter and some composite RCA cables from Amazon, as I chucked mine a year or so when we moved. Haven't hooked up anything with those in ages. Even the SNES in my closet has an S-video cable.
Had to activate the SD box to get it, it's going back into the closet now. Just want to use HBO go. It's been a while since I saw SD TV, it looked pretty terrible, quadruple letter-boxed.
The only thing I would use analog RCA jacks for would be if I wanted to hook up an original NES or something for some classic gaming. Other than that they have zero use to me.

I run all my analog stuff through my receiver, which outputs to the TV thru HDMI at 1080p. Doesn't work for games though since there's a time delay getting the picture to the screen. I've also seen stand-alone boxes that will convert analog video to HDMI. What I may need in the future though is one that can also handle digital audio to use with my laserdisc player, if receivers ever stop including support for analog video.
S-Video has become very rare on equipment lately. I actually need to get an S-Video to standard RCA adaptor, which are available through mail order, so I can play my Sega Saturn again- I got the S-Video cable for that a long time ago and threw out the RCA cable for it, now I've got a TV with no S-Video jack!

It won't be long before you won't need to auction a lung off in order to buy a 4K OLED TV, which means there's even less reason to buy a plasma than ever before. That's why LG has finally joined Samsung and Panasonic in taking the outdated business out back, shotgun in hand. According to Reuters, the company has quietly told local regulators that the plasma TV lines will cease production towards the end of November, leaving China's Changhong Electric Co. as the last manufacturer in town. Still, we'd certainly expect the price of plasmas to slip downward as the technology heads towards the exit door, so perhaps this holiday season is the ideal time to pick up a bargain.
