I'm not really sure whether this is a hardware problem or not, so I'm posting in both the DVD Talk and HT Hardware forums.

A few days ago, I finally took the plunge into DTS buy buying a new receiver (Pioneer Elite VSX-35TX). It worked fine with a couple of DTS titles I already owned (Twister, Lethal Weapon), but when I put on Gladiator tonight, the DTS ES track sounds like it's playing through a loud cellphone -- completely distorted. I pulled out my copy of T2, and the DTS ES track on that one is distorted as well.

Can someone explain what the problem is here -- is it my receiver or maybe my player (Phillips DVD825) -- and what I can do to fix it.

Dts es uses 6 speakers. I dont know why it would make a distorted sound though. Both of mine play fine.

I'm wondering if the problem may be in my DVD player, which since I didn't have a DTS receiver, has never been tested for DTS. It does have the DTS logo on the front of the machine, but in general it seems to behave strangely when I am trying to play a DTS track -- e.g., freezing sometimes when I try to move from one chapter to another.

My original description of the sound I am now getting was a little light. There seems to be a constant loud buzz in the track, and all voices sound like they are running through some sort of voice modulator -- all male voices sound essentially the same -- with heavy distortion of all sounds, music, voices, etc.

I am not sure what the problem is but my suggestion would be to try them in a different DTS setup and see what happens. It does not make sense. DTS ES tracks should behave no differently then DTS 5.1 tracks in your setup.

Hmmmm ... curiouser and curiouser.

The problem here doesn't seem to be with DTS ES as I had originally supposed -- a fact which may put be a bit closer to a solution -- but with all DTS tracks except those on Warner Brothers disks. I've tested all the DTS titles I currently own, with the following results:

Twister (WB), Lethal Weapon (WB), Interview with a Vampire (WB) -- all sound fine in DTS

Gladiator (DW), Fantasia (Disney), T2 (Artisan), Dreamscape (Image) -- all distorted in DTS

Does this information help anyone to guess whether the problem is more likely with my player or my receiver?
