Newbie needs advice for AV room

I'm looking to dedicate a room in the house
to become a television room... budget of about 4000-5000 ... what kinds of setups should I be looking at as far as TVs, surround sound, etc? I have a low end Sony DVD player that has 5.1, so not sure if I'd be upgrading it or not...
