make sure you have:
* a digital connection between between your receiver and your dvd player -- this is 1 cable, and not the red and white analog connections
* your dvd player set so that it's outputting a digital signal

Do you have an optical or coaxial cable running between your player and receiver???
Welcome To The Forum!!!
Someone will help you to get going eventually...just try and let us know exactly what you have done as far as hooking up your player and receiver...

Welcome to the Forum. If you are watching movies in 3/2 then you are listening to 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. Sony simply displays 3/2 instead of 5.1. The 5.1 button you keep pushing has nothing to do with 5.1 sound on DVDs. It is simply for an additional 5.1 source. I assume you have been switching your reciever to DVD and thus are getting 3/2 (Dolby Digital). As far as I can tell you have everything hooked up correctly and are cureently enjoying the world of Dolby Digital.

If I am not mistaken he says that he can not get sound from the 5.1 input. He does say he is currently running most movies at 3/2 which is Dolby Digital. Please correct me if I have misunderstood you artichell.

I noticed you have a Sony reciever, and you're not getting any sound...
I have a feeling you're pressing the 5.1CH button on your reciever, when you should be pressing the DVD/LD button. Your optical cable is most likely going to the port that should say "DVD/LD" Therefore, out of the buttons that say "CD","Tuner","5.1CH" press the "DVD/LD" button to set your reciever to output the digital sound. The 5.1CH setting is only when you have a DVD player with a digital decoder (or you have a Laserdisc), and in that case, you'll be plugging in 6 cables to your reciever, and I don't think that's the case.
I'm pretty sure that's the problem...good luck

You don't need the the red and white cables. Just the optical cable.

Sorry for the confusion.
on sony reciver i have one button 5.1ch input
if i press this i have no sound. I am running a optical cable from my dvd to my reciver and an s-video to my tv thats it. my dvd player both has dts and DD decoders in it but like i said i am running at 3/2. your repliy was that 3/2 is 5.1 correct. so what would the 5.1 ch button be used for. Also on my reciver you all have said that i have to have it on dvd/LD setting, this i have and still no sound when pressing 5.1 button.
i have also put the setting for digital(Optical) for the cable i am using from my dvd player. both digital decoders are working with my dvd and reciver. Thank you all for helping

If you look at the back of your reciever, you'll see 6 inputs (that look like they fit RCA cables) and a box around it, labeled 5.1CH. When you press the 5.1CH button, you are utilizing these inputs. From your setup you're not using these inputs - that's why pressing 5.1CH gives you no sound.
Your DVD player is sending all 6 channels of sound over your optical cable, and your reciever is decoding it.
If you have a DVD player with a built-in decoder, you'd probably be using the 5.1CH inputs
well, at least you're up and running

What Kamanari said is correct. Simply keep doing whatever you were doing before to get 3/2 (Dolby Digital) and everything should be fine.

Hey Artichell why don't you stop your crying and go buy a clock radio. Sounds to me like that's more your speed. While your at it why don't you move back to England and stop bugging me to fix all your stuff.

I know you are a knew member, but there was no call for that. There was no reason for you to post such a comment. If you don't want to help then fine. One of the objectives of DVD Talk is to help members out with DVD/HT related problems or issues in general. I think if you continue to post comments like that you are not going to be here for much longer.

I knew some of you guys would give me some grief about my post. If you can't tell from my post I work at the same prison with Artichell. I only posted that as a joke for his amusement. No disrespect was intended towards any members of this forum.

As noted....you should have mentioned this in your original post....until I saw this post, I was about to jump your case myself!!! Many of us here take a protective stance toward our fellow dvdtalk members and when a post such as this is written, we tend to attack the aggressor...especially when it is dealing with a new member who may not know any better!!! Since this forum is about helping others, posts such as this are not welcomed unless you make it known that it is a joke and the other person involved is not offended by this joke.
I would like to welcome both of you to the forum and hopefully something has been learned from this thread!!!
