Anybody and everybody wanna report on your DVD player model and whether or not you notice the pause during the layer switch?

My model is the Toshiba 2109 and I notice about a second pause between layers.

If this has been posted before, I'm sorry - I couldn't find it in a search. I'd like to purchase a new DVD player on the cheap and wanna know which ones breeze past the layer switch without a hiccup. I'm looking at the lower end Sony units. Any word on how the 200 disc sony player handles discs?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it just depends on the player alone. AKAIK it also depends on how the DVD was mastered and where the layer change was put. I am pretty sure you will not find any player on the market that deals with the layer change flawlessly with every DVD. Having said that I have a two year old entry level Sony player (DVP-S300) and I have hardly ever noticed the layer change.

I have a Pioneer 525 and i get the same around 1/2sec layer switch...but I belive it also depends on the DVD because there are some that i dont notice it on at all.

i usually notice the layer switch on the pioneer dv-333 but only because i know where they are--as long as someone has designed the disc well and puts the switch on a fade to black, it's relatively hard to notice. even though it's only about the same time described above (about 1/2 second or maybe less) it's very clear where the switch is when it just freeze-frames an image of the film. i'm sure there isn't always an easy place to put a layer switch unobtrusively (and it sure beats flipping the disc), but it is frustrating to watch some movies and see better places to stick the switch within a minute or two of where they stuck it.

I have tested many of the same DVDs between two different machines. Sony 650D takes about 1/2 second for layer change. Apex AD-600A is always completely imperceptible. I don't think it is a function of the DVD.

I agree with X - my friend's Sony entry level player handles the layer switch flawlessly. My Toshiba hiccups on every DVD I own... the same DVDs on my friend's Sony play straight through.

As I said it's a combination pf player and DVD, both being possible factors. I have an entry level Sony player and while most of my DVD's do not have a problem with the layer change a small number have and do.

I have a Toshiba SD5109 and have yet to experience any layer switch delays or flaws of any kind on any disc. I tested T2 as I knew exactly where it switched and there was not even a hint of a pause. On the other hand, a friend has a cheap player and it hiccups almost all the time. it's a real pain trying to watch a movie at his place because of all the interruptions in the movie, and it doesn't matter what the disc is. Layer changes take up to 3 seconds at times.
