Laserdisc player question...
#1
I have a Sony MDP 333 Laserdisc player and I have a slight picture problem.
The image seems to slightly "ghost" that is I can see a slight transparent outline on the right side of images on screen.
Example: When watching Return of the Jedi, Lukes face has an outline of his face outside the right side of his face and slightly on the left inside of his face. This slight ghosting occurs with all of my discs, its not horrible, but I was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem before?

Well I bought the player used and since I have had it (a year) it has showed this problem. It has become more apparent now that I have it hooked up to a 27 inch tv. The problem does exist with all of my laserdiscs. Is laser mis-alignment a costly repair?

not sure. the only time i had to help someone with a repair on a laser disc player it was still under warranty. I would call a home theater store in baltimore that sells sony to get a place they would recommend to repair it. I would not call a best buy type but a real home theater store. If not call or email sony to get them to recommend one. I would then have them look it over to give you an estimate for repairs. Do you have a lot of laser discs? if not i would not spend to much to repair it. I have a two hundred lasers and i would have to think twice before spending much to repair my player.

How do you have the laserdisc connected to the TV?<HR>
I have it hooked up with S-video and the regular video out. I know that by using the S-video I am bypassing the players comb filter but the S-video in my opinion gives a slightly better picture. When comparing the two connections I notice that the ghosting effect is evident through both connections.

First, could it have anything to do with connecting both the composite and s-video at the same time?
Second, would you call it a ghost effect or more of a halo effect?
It originally sounded like a bad video cable connection, maybe a short, but if it's behaved like this on 2 TVs - the old one and a new 27" - then it's got to be the player. Maybe that's why the seller replaced it. I wouldn't personally shell the money out for a laser realignment, and I'm not sure that's the cause of the problem.
BTW, there's nothing wrong with bypassing that comb filter - the TV probably has a better one anyhow. But maybe the inherent fuzziness of the composite connection would hide the ghost better.
