Any ideas?

P.S. I don't like Toshiba SD1600, b/c supposibly it lacks ability to play VCDs.

You could try the Apex AD-703. It's a multidisc DVD/VCD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW player with an integrated MP3 decoder. Personally, I own the Toshiba SD-5109, but my friend has the Apex and loves it.

If you need CD-R playback, get the Pioneer DV-333. It's the best entry level player on the market that can read CD-R media. If you don't, I highly reccomend the Sony DVP-S360. I've got one and it's flawless. Another cheaper option, is the Philips 711 player. My friend has it and hasn't had any problems so far. It also can read CD-R media. The philips does have it's drawbacks though(poor user interface, horribly small remote control, and is slow and loud) but it is quite a bit cheaper than the others. Good luck!
