Sub $200 soundbars any good?

We finally ended up with a Samsung sound bar, and for DVDs, TV, video games, etc, the sound is decent. Not as expansive as I'd like, but it's good enough for now.

But playing a CD (via the Bluray player) just sounds like crap. We have the player going to the TV via HDMI, then the sound back to the bar via optical. Is there a setting somewhere to make CDs sound decent? I tried turning off any fake surround effects already.

Is there something else?
