Does it matter what you use to hookup a powered sub? I was just going to use some 10 AWG speaker wire, but a sales guy said I should use an audio cable since the pre-outs are RCA jacks. Does it matter with a sub? Will the shielding in an audio cable provide that much better signal. Also he was touting a solid core audio cable, is that better than stranded?

There's two ways:
Use speaker wire and attach the sub to the R/L speaker outputs on the receiver.
Use a shielded RCA-type cable and hook it up to the subwoofer line output on the receiver.
It sounds like you're trying method 1, but as ZenDog, the salesman, and I agree, if possible use the latter method.

You should definitely go with the RCA jacks. You don't want to overload the sub sending power from your receiver and burn the amp. The safest way is to use the RCA jacks. Just get some decent jacks. Don't spend a whole lot of money on them. Especially if the sub is not being run to far from the receiver.

yep. on my old sub, i bought a length of good quality rg-6 cable and 2 "f" to "rca" adapters.
very inexpensive, very well shielded and sounded great.
my new sub is a do-it-yourselfer so i am using 12 guage speaker wire.
cranky.
