I have a new DVD player but an old receiver and TV, so I don't have component video; but I do have S-video and I want to use it (since it hear it's such a big leap over composite).

My budget is tight, so Monster Cables are out of the question. However, I want to get the best combination of price and quality in an s-video cable. What brands should I look for? What stores should I shop at?

Go to Radio Shack and pay about $10-$15 for your S-Video cable...just as good as a Monster cable!!!
