I was in the process of looking for a 27" tv which has s-video and component video out. Most of the sets like the Toshiba and RCA are about $550-$700 cdn. I thought I was pritty sure what I wanted, until someone told me to look into maybe a HDTV set, he said the picture quality and the option of having 16:9 is fantastic.

I am confused now wether I should really just save my money and invest it towards a HDTV set. I searched futureshop.ca and came up with some results, but DAMN!! Alot of $$$. I just want to ask your guys opinion wether I should just go for a normal 27" Toshiba set, or maybe go for a HDTV set like this Toshiba :
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...VXUUH0NTNEF62C

which is a 50" and selling for about $3,100.

guys I need your help/opinion asap.. since I would like a TV to go along my dc/dvd setup which I am getting very soon

I have a Toshiba DW65X91 65" 16x9 HDTV, & I love it. The picture is great. Don't forget that most of these tvs are "HDTV-ready", which means you're going to need to spend about another $1,000 to get a decoder. My model has the decoder built-in, and the DirecTv digital satellite receiver built-in, plus it came with an elliptical dish (needed to get DirecTvs' HD stations). So if you're planning on using it for HD, there are more accesories that you'll need. Also a high-power antenna for your local HD stations. If you don't need to watch HD shows yet, you'll be ready for great dvd viewing right away. With a progressive-scan player, even non-anamorphic movies look pretty damn clear (just watched From Dusk Till Dawn today). As far as HD stuff, it looks promising so far with the new shows. I think all of CBS' shows are in HD now (except Survivor & Big Brother), & Fox even showed Dark Angel in 16x9 (although someone said it wasn't filmed in true HD though). But since the number of shows using HD seems to be growing, it might be good to get something with that capability, so you don't have to get another tv in a few years.

I have seen a ProScan 36" tube HDTV. I think it was about $2200. I don't own a RP but the ones out today you can see pretty well from the side.

Let me clarify a few things for you! First off whomever told you that RPTV's can't be viewed on the sides very good obiously hasn't seen any of the RPTV's for the last few years. The new RPTV's has excellent viewability from the sides.

Also don't be scared by the statement earlier about HD decoders being $1000 +! That is not even close to being true these days! These days you just need to buy a HD Satellite receiver for $500-$600 and not only you will have a HD decoder but you also have a built-in satellite receiver.

The statement that you need a "High Powered Antenna" for Local OTA channels is also way off! You only need a regular antenna to receive HD OTA just as you do for Analog OTA!

Yes, HDTV's are more expensive because it is still very early in the life of HD and as always the prices are much higher to start with. If you view a lot of DVD's and want to start enjoying HDTV and can handle the extra expense then I would advise you to not hestitate and buy a HDTV ASAP and start enjoying HDTV, Anamorphic DVD, and the new Progressive scan DVD players right away! You and your family and friends will be extremely impressed and you won't regret the added cost for one second!

My Toshiba picture does disappear if you go right in front of the tv, but a few feet to the side. As long as you're pretty much facing the tv though, you'll see it. Good luck finding a digital receiver/ HDTV decoder for 500-600. My friend got a Mitsubishi HDTV from a local chain & he's been on a waiting list for 3 months now trying to get a decoder/receiver combo. I think it's still about 1,000 though. And needing a high powered antenna isn't way off. I tried a regular one first & only got 1 station. Now that I got the powered digital antenna, I can pick up all but NBC's HD station(which is in the opposite direction). I only live about 30 miles from the transponder, so unless you live really close or have no mountains, etc. in the way, you will need more than a regular antenna. Tv salespeople said a regular one should work for me, but didn't (so I got the $700 one for free when I bitched at them, since I had already spent almost 10,000 there).

Well a visit to a DISH Network or DirectTV retailer will be all you need to do to score a $500-$600 Receiver/HDTV decoder. DISH sells the Model 6000 for $499 ($99 for OTA module which will be out in Novenber) for a total of $598, and DirectTV sells the DTC-100 for $599. Where's the good luck need to come in to score one of these receivers?

Yeah, but do the DirecTv/DishNetwork receiver/decoders also decode the over-the-air local HD signals or just their satellite HD? I thought someone from Toshiba told me mine had 2 decoders built-in or maybe it was when I was getting the tv?. The store that has the waiting list IS a DirecTv retailer, but I think they're not very smart. I think they were telling him he had to wait for a Mitsubishi decoder which is still coming out, because his HDTV is Mits. But they tried to tell me there were no other combos available also & mine was a Toshiba. It didn't matter since the tv I got had it all anyway. My friend took his name off the list & decided to wait till everything's a little cheaper, but if the ones you're talking about work for everything, I'll have to let him know.
