I have a DTS ready receiver, so would I need a decoder to hear DTS? or can I just use the six outputs from my DVD player to the six inputs on my receiver? Thanks

In order to hear DTS DVD's, you need one of the following:

1. a DTS decoder within your receiver;
2. an external DTS decoder connected to your receiver via 5.1 inputs; or
3. a DTS decoder built within your DVD player.

Options 1 and 2 are best since they offer the most flexibility. Option 3 should only be considered if you do not have 5.1 ready inputs in your receiver. Furthermore, there are very few DVD players that have a built-in DTS decoder.

Hope that this helps.

Dave

Hi!
If you want to hear DTS you need a DTS decoder either in the receiver (which you don't have) or the in the DVD player.
It's not clear by what you said whether you have a built-in DTS decoder in your DVD player or not.
You mentioned you have 6-channel outputs on the back of your DVD player so I'm assuming that your DVD player does have a 5.1 decoder of some kind...so being able to listen to DTS will depend upon what the decoder in your DVD player is (either Dolby Digital and/or DTS).

If it only has a Dolby Digital decoder then you will NOT be able to listen to DTS movies.

Thanks to both of you guys, I kinda got it now. I was bummed to find out that my reciever doesn't have a DTS decoder in it. So I guess that means I probably have to buy one of those external ones right? Would anyone know where I could get one of these for a good price?

Which receiver do you currently have? Besides not having DTS decoding, are you totally happy with your existing receiver?

If it's an older model, it probably be cheaper to sell it and get a new receiver with DD/DTS. Practically all new receivers now come with DD/DTS decoders built-in.

FWIW, DD and/or DTS decoders are no longer commonly found/available. They use to be popular when 5.1 ready receivers were in style. Some of the well known, but relatively inexpensive decoders include Technics SHAC500D (DD/DTS) and Millenium (DTS?). I think that the Technics SHAC500D is generally available for around US$200?. It's a entry level model that performs fairly well. I have had one for awhile....it's now for sale with a Technics DD-ready receiver ever since I bought a DD/DTS receiver (Sony 777ES).

I have the Kenwood VR-406 and I just bought it, I bought it online and I didn't realize it only had DD until I got it, I should have gotten the 407, I could shoot myself now.
