I'm looking for an upgrade to my old 51 inch rear projection HDTV. I haven't been keeping up with the latest developments so I'm not sure what the difference is between plasma, LED and LCD. Basically I just want the biggest, best looking TV that $1100 can buy. Here is a pic of ol' reliable:

Thanks for the recommendation. I should have been more specific though. I don't care about 3D or smart TVs. I'd want bigger than 50" but I don't want to sacrifice picture quality.

A little over your price how about the Panasonic VIERA TC-P60S30 60-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV. $1,272.92 at Amazon.com and about another $27 more at BB. I have the 50" version of this model (TC-P50S30) and really like it. I paid $795 for the TC-P50S30 at Sears and now I see it at Amazon for $711.90.

I spent months researching this very question before my recent TV purchase, so I can say this with some confidence. Samsung and Panasonic plasmas are considered by most videophiles to be the best TVs currently (Samsung has the edge in 2011 models, Pannys for the 2010 models).

I'd recommend the Sharp 60" LCD set, the LC-60E88UN. It's traditional back-lit LCD (not the more expensive LED), but it's a great set. Has the NexGen Sharp panel inside (the same panel in their Quattron sets).

For foreign TV addicts (like myself), it can also handle a pure PAL signal from your imported DVDs (if your player can output a pure PAL signal) over HDMI or Component (it's not documented in the manual). It also supports PAL format on the composite RCA inputs, which is documented in the manual (useful if you have a PAL or multi-system VCR, for instance).

The speakers aren't the greatest, but you can easily add a soundbar or Zvox if you don't already have a home theatre system for sound.

I thought it a bargain when I bought it last year for about $1,600-1,700. If you want to stick to your price range, you can get a refurbished one for $1,110 from Overstock.com (or new from about $1,550 from other places).

Thanks for all the advice guys. I ended up going for the 51" Samsung Plasma that Numanoid recommended. Got it from Best Buy for $899 with free delivery so it was well within my budget. Now all I have to do is wait for the wall mount to be delivered and figure out how the heck to run all the cables in the wall. Attic here I come!

Great price on the Samsung PN51D6500 over at Sears.com after using the $150 coupon code "SAM3D". Saw this over at slickdeals. My final cost after tax is $784.98. Even cheaper that what I paid for my 2D Panny Plasma a few months ago.

Numanoid, what did you pay for the 59", if you don't mind me asking? I think I've got it narrowed down to the Samsung D6500 or Panasonic ST30, historically would want the panny, but weary with the issues that are stated in the reviews on amazon.

Where'd you hear about that deal? I wish I wouldn't have seen it because now that has set the bar for what I will pay and the BF and Cyber Monday deals aren't getting anywhere near it.
