How often do you replace your TV?
Do you keep it for several years or maybe decades until it breaks down or do you feel the need to buy a new TV every 3-5 years when new technology comes out?
If you have multiple TVs I assume most of them are not old outdated clunkers.

I've had one TV for about 5 years, bought a bigscreen HDTV right before moving into a new house.
Prior to that, we had bought a small simple TV for the kitchen probably ten years before that. And prior to that, we got a 32", I think, that we've had for about 18 years - and still do.
Up until recently, TV tech hasn't really changed very much very fast.

When it breaks. Although I did upgrade my not-broken 27" to an HD projector several years ago. One time case for me.

I expect a television to last at LEAST 10 years. However, it does not necessarily mean that it will be my primary set that entire time. The main set tends to be ungraded every 5 or 6 years and the older set moved to another room.

Not often. I've had 2 TV's since 1999.
My current set has a problem with the Panel (faint Vertical Lines) but it isn't enough to distract from my movie/TV watching to replace it

Not often here and won't even consider it until they make one that surpasses the PQ of ours. We have no interest in 3D,so that won't be a factor for us.

We had a Sony XBR 36" tube for a good six years and then made the chaoice to upgrade to a LCD and sell the XBR to a friend. Mainly due to the new connections like HDMI which was just coming out. The TV still had a good picture.
We bought a Song LCD one year ago and replaced a Mits 48" RPTV. Mainly for space and also upgrading to newer connections and better picture with 1080p. The picture was outstanding and the Mits was calibrated. It was just big. Not unless HDMI becomes obsolete or the TV goes dead I don't see upgrading again for awhile.

Re: How often do you replace your TV?
I would say when it breaks or when there is a valid reason to upgrade.
I just upgraded my living room to a Plasma from a CRT last year and I will be updating my bedroom in the next month or so again to a Plasma from a CRT.
After that I don't know when I will upgrade again. I will probably end up doing it if someone wants to buy my old TV. This is the reason I am upgrading my bedroom. I don't watch it often enough, but my mom's CRT died and she doesn't need HD. As a result she will be getting my old 36" CRT and I will upgrade my bedroom to a 50 or 55" Plasma.

Re: How often do you replace your TV?
Well over 10 years ago I had to replace my 21inch Sony tube Tv (brought it for $400 at the time and sold it for $200) My first flat screen tv was a Gateway Plasma 42 inch which is still currently working but I sold over 6 years ago. It was replaced by a 32 inch Sony Bravia HDTV. The picture is a thousand times better. Last year I got another Tv, this time a Samsung 40inch LED HDTV, this is now my main set.

Replaced my 50in Samsung DLP only after it broke. Lasted 5 years. Now on a 55in Mitsubishi LED which I expect to keep for quite awhile.

My 65" RPTV was still working great, but I finally got rid of it before I moved last October. Got tired of having to move that behemoth around.
I had it for 7 years.

Re: How often do you replace your TV?
Had a 35" Mitsubishi Crt a huge monster for about 15 years. I purchased a 42" Westinghouse 42w2 1080p LCD Monitor in 05/06. Almost broke my back moving that Mitsubishi down stairs to my nieces room. Purchased a 4 year warranty from BB for $145 at the time I purchased the Westinghouse. Almost 2 years to the day the panel starting to have problems. So BB gave me a full refund of $1500 and I purchased a Samsung LNx46580 1080P LCD. Now 38 months old I just purchased a Panasonic VIERA TC-P50S30 Plasma on Saturday for $795. Will pick up tomorrow. Saw no sense in selling the Samsung LNx46580. Since new 2011 120hz models are going for $799 or lower. Asked my 2 brothers if they wanted it both have 32" LCD's and they declined. So once again my niece will end up with this one. At least it will be much easier carry down stairs. Knock on wood this one will last 4-8 years.

I replace mine whenever they break down. I don't usually have the extra dough to go out and "upgrade" my TV without reason. I'm only on my 4th TV in the past 20+years. I tend to go through VCRs & DVD players quicker than my TV but I guess that's normal.

I've had a Panny 42" EDTV for about 6 years now. That going to be replaced soon though. I just ordered a 47" passive 3D LED from LG. I'll be retiring the Panny to the bedroom.

Re: How often do you replace your TV?
I've had 4 in the last 25 years so roughly 8 years per TV. We had a 27 inch SONY when we got married. Then we upgraded to a 48" SONY. After that developed a faint vertical line I sold it and got a 55" RPTV WS Toshiba. That lasted about 8 years when the power supply started acting up so I gave that to a friend and got the 58" Panasonic I have now. So I wait until I start having problems but i don't wait until the thing dies.
As a side note; my sister-in-law and her husbad just replaced the RPTV they got the first year the Bills were in the Super Bowl (20 years ago)

I bought a 27" Sharp tube TV about 14 years ago that I used as my main TV up until 2 years ago, we now have it as the bedroom TV, never once had any sort of issue with it, it made it through multiple moves, its been dropped, its been banged up and its still ticking, its hard to let it go. So, hopefully I wont be buying a new TV for 12 more years

Re: How often do you replace your TV?
My main TV has been replaced 3 times in 11 years. A 50" Mits, a 65" Hitachi and now a 73" Mits. I expect I'll be upgrading the Mits in about 5 years or sooner. The 50" Mits has just now stopped working which is in my bedroom I'll probably be replacing that with a 50ish plasma. The 65" Hitachi is now downstairs and still working great.
Before the 50" Mits i had a 31" Panasonic, I remember that TV well, it was an $1800 set I got for $1000 from Circuit City. Long story short the president of Circuit City called me and sent me the TV after finding a flaw in another line of TV's.

UGH. I've had my Samsung 50" plasma for 3 1/2 years and it's now got green & red snow on it. Swapped out the cable, no diff, and it's coming from all sources. This does not seem good, out of warranty, repair guy says probably the main panel, $1000. !@)(#*!@()#. So may be replacing WAY sooner than I'd anticipated...
