My parents (late 50s) are planning on buying a DVD player. I don't want to steer them towards anything too fancy or elaborate because they don't need it. They've got a standard 25" TV, standard stereo set-up.

I see that Amazon has a Panasonic DVD-RV30 DVD Player for $250.

Thoughts?

I would stay away from Panasonic. They continually have firmware problems as well as many problems handling new releases with advanced features. Pioneer is probably the most trouble free player you can buy, look at model 525, or the new 333 which has replaced the 525. Another great choice is Sony, and in the budget minded department lookk for model 360. All of these players mentioned can be found for 250 or less online and offer more peace of mind than a Panasonic.

While I have never used a Panasonic DVD player I don't think it is a good choice reliability or compatibility wise. Toshiba's are good if you are prepared to have the firmware upgraded if need be as they have had several software incompatibility issues. Your best bet would be to look at the low end Sony's and Pioneer's that go for around $200. I think a few examples are the Sony DVP-S360 and the Pioneer 333 or 525 models.

All companies seem to have their share of problems but the one with least seems to be Pioneer. I'm looking at the Pioneer DV-333 as my new player.
