Video Esssentials Question

I rented video Essentials from Netflix and have a few questions for previous users.
1) I have a 2 year old Sony TV and to match the Blue I had to turn the color bar way down so that all the colors were muted somewhat. Is this normal or did I screw up?
2) I used the radio shack SLM and am almost certain it is broken. It never registered any sound at any setting but the battery tested fine. i had it on the settings they recommend and never saw the needle move during any test tone, snapping clapping and all foolish stuff also did not register. So it's broken/defective right?
3) I have the Sony DB940 and in addition to the DB settings for front/rear/center etc. there are independent controls for Treble, Bass and midrange anyone know the best way to set these or is it a what sounds best for my ears thing?

#2 - I had the same problem with the first sound meter that I picked up. Exchaged it and the new one works fine.
#3 - I would think you'd want to adust to your personal prefs and then balance the volume level of your speakers.

Did you set your black level and contrast first?
If not, do that first, and then correct the color and tint.
Your color and tint should match all the way across. (on some sets this is difficult to do but if you get them as close as possible then it should be ok).
