What do I need for HD TV?

I'm not sure if this should go in Tech or TV, so I'm throwing it in Tech.

I've done a few google searches, but there are so many conflicting sources I'm still a bit confused.

I have a Tivo Series 3 (HD capable) and a Samsung 720p LCD TV (connected with HDMI Cable. Is it possible for me to watch TV in HD with this setup? or do I need something else? All of my current stations appear to be in SD. I have just changed my recording quality from Basic to Best but I'm fairly certain that won't change anything since I'm still *viewing* it in SD. Is there anything else I need to do? Or do I need some more equipment?

Also, I have NetFlix and I like to watch the streams. The little indicator says it's streaming in HD, yet it doesn't look any better than DVD quality. Any advice for that?

You're using a Series 3. Is that with Cable Cards? Or how are you getting your channels?

Assuming you're within range of your local affiliates, a decent antenna is enough to receive the networks in HD.

If you have Cable Cards through your cable company, check your channel package. Typically, you should get your local channels in HD. You might have to pay extra for an HD channel package.

And there is no recording quality for digital channels. You can't record HD in "basic".

Netflix quality could come down to download speed. What do you have?

For cable, the HD channels are separate numbers from their SD channels. Be sure you're tuning in the right channel.

For example, on my Time Warner Cable, FOX in SD is channel 8, while FOX in HD is channel 708.

Also, make sure that the Tivo is set to output HD (720/1080). It may be defaulted to output 480i or 480p.

What is the resolution set up in the menu? I haven't used the same model as you, but other Tivo HDs have had the ability to change the resolution output. You may just be set to 480.

Re: What do I need for HD TV?

Ya, I was set to 480 on my Tivo. So I tried both the 720 Hybrid (cause I believe my tv is 720) and 1080 Hybrid. But it doesn't look much different. I am also viewing it on the HD stations instead of the regular ones. It could just be me, however, I am going to wait until a sporting event is on, whenever I'm at my friend's house I can always tell a difference when he turns on the football game.

Are you sure that your TV is tuned to the HDMI source and not Channel 3/4?
