Ques: Blu Ray Player connected via Component

Unfortunately, I still have a TV and Receiver where the max video resolution is limited via Component video connections. Given that, I purchased the SONY BDP-S570 BD player with the thought that at least I can play BD discs and they'll play at either 720p or 1080i, resolutions that my TV can handle.

It doesn't appear that my SONY BD player will allow me to output more than 480p with Component output. Reading up a bit, this appears to be a fairly common thing on many BD players.

Can anyone educate me on if this is definitely the case and if there are any BD players that will allow me the higher resolutions given the TV that I have?

Thanks.

Your BDs should play at up to 1080i via component. It's SD DVDs that are limited to 480p since upconverting only works via HDMI.

Thanks Kevin. I hope that is the case as I'm planning on getting some BD discs for Xmas. The setting on the SONY BDP-S570 though only allow me to apply 480p...hopefully this is only for the non BD discs.

This changes as of 1/1/11. Then HD res will only be allowed over HDMI on new machines. Did Sony jump the gun?

That stinks - my old Pioneer RPTV is still going strong (with no HDMI). Those older machines will probably become awfully popular!

It's called the Analog Sunset, if anyone wants to research. Any AACS machine made beginning 1/1/11 must limit analog output to 480p or i, I forget which format. Machines made up til 12/31/10 may be sold after 1/1/11, up to some other date, one or two years.

AACS is the copy protection used on Bluray. Funny, nothing else uses it. My opinion, nothing will due to the dumbass Analog Sunset.
